If I'm ever find myself in the position of being questioned by police in a criminal investigation, I'm calling a lawyer before I say a single word to the police.

Even the police detective admitted, it's like deciding to enter the ring with an Olympic boxing champion when you've never boxed before in your life. The entire paying field is slanted against you. The police are allowed to lie or use deception in the course of obtaining a confession or conviction. If they catch you lying to them, you'll get sentenced even more harshly.

If the cops decide for whatever reason that you're their man, you're probably going to go to jail.

Which was set up in an engineering building, across a football field by our dorm.

We had every right not to let them in. No warrant or anything.

Instead, they came in, I told them as little as possible, then they came back and got the whole deal out of my roommate. And that was it for him.

This video, on p. 1, she is a good video. Everyone should watch it. It summarizes all the reasons for not allowing oneself to be questioned by the cops quite well. It is the reason for this thread.

I think the whole 'cops are good/bad' thing is dumb. Cops are people--a lot of them suck, some of them are all right. A few of them are great. They steal shit and help people out and act like dicks and are nice to other people in rough proportion to the behavior of the rest of us.

Thankless job, may or may not need to be done. I'm inclined to think it needs to be done.

But unlike other people, they are in an unique position to fuck up your life--whether they even MEAN to do it.

All it takes is a cop forgetting something you told him or hearing you wrong--he doesn't even have to have malicious intent for you to get in trouble for talking to him.

I think a lot of cops understand this, and as a result they tend to respect polite brevity over a bunch of yammering and excuses.

When I was in high school, I got drunk with a couple of friends in their hood. We ended up at White Castle and ordered shakes. They didn't like this guy who owned this furniture store close by, so we spit a bunch of our shakes all over his store window. Cops pulled up, we all took off. A couple blocks away I stopped to take a piss in the alley and an undercover cop car pulls up. They ask me where my friends are, was I the one who spit on the window, etc. I keep saying I don't know what they're talking about. They asked me what I was doing and - here's the mistake - I said I was taking a piss. I got arrested for public indecency.

I'm guessing they could have easily arrested me for something else had I not offered up that nugget, but still I wish I knew then what I knew now.

Cops - can't live with them...

The police officer is even like, never ever talk to us, we will find a way to convict you. We will follow you in your car until you break a law (which you eventually will), and then ask you the right questions to find out what they're looking for.

Scary stuff.

Well, kind of.

He says if they want to get you on something, you're gonna do something wrong, and they can get you on that.

And that you are no match for guys who a) don't give a shit how long the interview takes and b) do this kind of thing for a living, all day every day.

I don't see what is so scary about it. The police have a lot of power. Always have. It is not completely unchecked, but they have a lot of power.

I think there are honorable people who make this decision. Why not?

I know a state's attorney who did it b/c he wanted to serve the public and it offended his sensibilities less than having to defend known criminals. At least he has a degree of latitude in deciding which cases to prosecute. I can understand that.

I can understand thinking, "Someone's gotta be a cop, and I'm a reasonable guy, so I am going to do it."
