Not crap, with a touch of grey.
They could be the shittiest musicians on the planet, but by virtue of being integral to the foundations of the psychedelic revolution of the '60's and the distribution of LSD until Garcia's death, as I see it, this band had a much larger positive impact on society than 100 bands of greater musical prowess.

To quote one of my buddies:
I'd rather watch my dad jerk off to naked pictures of my mom.

haha.
i can respect them to a degree, but i dislike their music. i do however thank them for the bay area shows which provided me with essentially every hit/drop of acid i ever took.
not crap for that alone.

It just occurred to yours truly, not more than a few minutes ago, that "The Grateful Dead" is a very good band name.

Live/Dead and a few of the other songs - "Uncle John's Band" in particular - were really good.
The rest is shit.

I don't have the words to express the degree of hate I have for this band. The closest I can come up with is that I would like to shit in their mother's pussies.
Crap.

the campus has been trying to downplay its "hippy/druggy" image for years now. i'm not sure this is the right way to do it.

I have been caught off guard by Dead songs a few times in the last 6mos (am I usually ON GUARD against such things?).
They sounded pretty good. These particular songs.
I was at my friend Karl Hendrick's house a few months ago. He had this huge Dead box set. Turns out he loves them. Never would've guessed.
So I bought Wake of the Flood and Workingman's Dead, which I haven't heard since I was sixteen.
Will get to them at some point. I'd actually kind of like to like them, at this point in my life.

I have casually considered, any number of times, picking up
American Beauty and/or
Workingman's Dead, the two "rootsy" Dead records that so many Deadheads (and others) are certain I will enjoy. Up to this point, though, I haven't been able to bring myself to do it. Let me know what you think.
