i'm pretty sure J's wife plays bass for Channels, if that's who you're talking about.

they were on the same label (dischord), used the same studio (inner ear) and the same producers (mackaye and nicely), toured together on countless occasions, shared a drummer and road crew, left dischord at pretty much the same time for major labels and then released their two finest albums to little acclaim before being dropped.

they practically ran neck and neck throughout their careers.

Also, some members of the bands shared a house.

I got into them a little late -- right around the release of For Your Own Special Sweetheart, which I loved and still love. One of my favourite albums from the 90s for sure.

I even don't hate the next one, and I still put it on sometimes.

I picked up all the earlier stuff on vinyl around the time I got into "Sweetheart", and I must confess that each record's only received one or two listens. Whatever -- I shouldn't have to make myself like any album if it's not demanding further listens.

Only saw them once, with Jawbreaker, and like someone else said, they stole the show. We left pretty early during Jawbreaker's set because it was so anticlimactic.

All in all, definitely not crap, even though my love for them is based largely on one album.

I saw them play live many times in the early 1990's. With Circus Lupus, with Fugazi, with Shudder To Think, etc. I heard their first three albums. While they weren't terrible and put on relatively decent live shows, they still get a CRAP vote from me.

There's something so safe and ultra-melodic about them. The production on the albums was sterile, like Def Leppard or something. The hummable melodic singing really makes me cringe. Watching Kim Coletta bounce around stage with her ponytails, the band had this particular "they are so muppet-like I am bored"- I can recall counting how many songs it would take before her hair would come un-rubber banded. So predictable and pre-emo I just didn't get it. Sorry.

CRAP.

Both bands names were "Jaw" something.
Then we get Burning Airlines and Jets To Brazil at the exact same time.
What are the odds?

The one time i saw Jawbreaker they had the unenviable task of playing after Jawbox. Jawbox made them look silly.

Jawbox is not crap.

I never got to see either of them live, but friends of mine saw both of them numerous times. They said the exact same thing about the bad idea that Jawbreaker had when they thought it was a good idea for Jawbox to open for them.

I used to love watching her play. Not only was she really cute, but she had a great bass sound. I listened to one of their records last week and her bass sound is still one of my favorites.

Not crap.
