I think the problem is that certain vocal segments of our society regard homosexuality as a "perversion," therefore it's a relatively short step to associate it with pedophilia, bestiality and other abnormal sexual behaviors. It mostly boils down to religion and other archaic types of worldview.

They do not have the propensity to nurture mature sexual relationships with men or women. Their desire is children with the focus on age moreso than sex of the child. The latter rests on a fixation with a particular sex. Basically, child molesters are not gay for their own sex. It has nothing to do with homosexuality or heterosexuality for that matter.
