Band: Nirvana

mattw,

I was addressing the issue of the "bands" name dropped in question. As for Steve and the recording of In Utero, I don't doubt it, also because they were unsatisfied with the Vig mix on Nevermind, too polished. At the same time, I'm sure they also wanted Steve because of the other bands he had recorded in the past ( like the Pixies) and I have read that Cobain liked Big Black.

Points from the newbie, who has been listening to Steve Albini and his recording projects for a number of years, despite that fact.

1. Saying Nirvana is controversial is not an attack. It's an observation about highly divided opinions about the merits of the band.

2. Okay, you are right. All Apologies is not a melodic or accesible song by any stretch of the imagination. Excuse me.

3. I just find it annoying when people say they hate Nirvana and then don't offer a noteworthy reason why. Some reasons I have heard are actually pretty good to my ears. Sue me.

4. I have met people who liked Nevermind and not In Utero. Online music reviewer Mark Prindle, for instance, thinks In Utero was a misstep and that it "stinks like ass."

5. Who is Walter Malling? Apparently, I sound like him without ever having heard the name. Sorry again.

6. Yes, I am new here. But I am already ready to leave the warm and welcoming environment of these boards, as presented on this topic. And judging by the antagonistic tone of this board, I am not in the mood for your solicitation. I apoligize.

7. Sure In Utero had hit singles. That does not mean evey person alive likes the record as a whole. The music reviewer stated above, for instance.

8. Anarchy in the Bronx makes a valid point. More people think Nirvana are not crap on this topic. You are entitled to your opinion. Now stop having a paranoid minority complex. And to the post following it, only a listener can govern whether something is shit or not. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

I like Nirvana. Some don't. It doesn't mean we have to attack each other like two-year-olds. Oh sorry, that's right, I'm the one who needs to grow up.....

Cute.

Viva la sarcasm.

I'll agree that ll apologies is a very melodic, accessible song.

However, I was questioning whether or Nirvana had any great and melodic songs.

I think you are misunderstood, Mr. Interwheb Persona. I was never out to attack anyone's opinion. All I wanted was to be provided with a few solid reasons as to why Nirvana is such a respectable band.

Instead, I got told, by you, that I do not have musical taste.

And I appreciate it.

These kinds of discussions are so constructive!

They were capable of writing good songs with catchy, melodic hooks ie just about anything on Nevermind or In Utero.

Cobain was good with power chords

Dave Grohl is a gifted drummer

Steve produced their final and best studio album

Friends with Sonic Youth

Were in good company with a lot of other great bands. People like myself discovered a lot terrific underground bands as a result of them

They had good taste in music

Their overall sound had a huge impact, both good and bad.
