How was ATP?
42This sort of shit is for out door crappy festivals!
I came back toward my chalet on the Saturday night thinking that Mick Hucknal and Simply Red had broken into a version of "Fairground" (Lightning Bolt style) and bought their own drum theatre workshop!!!!
I think I was justified at shouting "SHUT THE FUCK UP!" in nothing but underpants at the chalet door, it being 5 in the morning and everything?!

How was ATP?
44It was a lot later than 11pm - it was way after the bands had finished for starters. This is exactly the kind of knobhead behaviour that you get at the big crap outdoor summer festivals (Reading and the like) and 50% of the reason I stopped going to said big crappy festivals.
I also heard someone use (i.e. scream at his friends face) the term 'fuckinmelvinsdude' as a single word. Tragic and very annoying.
Mind you, if there had been more bands to watch, it's possible that less people would have spent all day every day getting wasted - which I suspect was at the root of most of the pain in the arse behaviour.

45This was the fourth time in six years that I have attended ATP, and along wiht my fellow chalet mates I can concurr with the majority of people on here that this was the worst by far.
The fact that the event sold out on the basis of Slint alone seems to me to be the route of the most of the evils, in that nothing else was anywhere near up to this level. The fact that it sold out on the basis of slint is also bizarre considering that at least 50% (in my personal experience, 50% of the people I spoke to) of the crowd had no interest in Slint, but were total scenesters who wanted a gig to reference. General level of discussion: "they were like totally my favourite band for about a month."/"I don't know anything by Slint, but, someone told me it was worth seeing, and there's nothing on downstairs."
Slint were amazing, and it was a very interesting experience watching them play songs which have been so formative for me, it was sentimental and unnnerving at the same time. Perhaps most unnervingly though, was the fact that it sounded so album-perfect that all I could imagine was that they relearned their own songs from cd. no development or idiosyncracies, spooky.
Early Man seem to have slipped under the radar here, they were excellent, far better than Bad Wizard.
Matmos: "Some people call us art school": I go to art school, I know shit when I hear it. never reached potential. likewise, Mum sounded cold and formulaic. I won't bother reitterating all the other criticisms of bands from red nails to sons&daughters, they all stand.
there was too little diversity in music, the bands were small, amateurish and generally poor, too many people meant it was impossible to appreciate the acoustic, singer/songwriter numbers - this is the wrong event for too much of this music, and at night the dj-ing was stock and revolved around college-union style northern soul and cheap tricks.
The fact that only one band was on at a time left thousands of people without any otpion but to get drunk, rather than suffer the oppressive heat and crush of the small venue, which lead to much more arsehole behaviour at night. Twice I opened my chalet door in pyjamas in the early morning to ask loud morons to move away from the window, intimidated because they were invariably groups of drunken men. I have never felt this way at ATP before.
Foundation would do well to check out the general level of criticism because ATP is certainly worthy of support, but a balance must be struck, between showcasing new music and rewarding enthusiasm and giving value for money.
sorry, this is my first post on here and it's gotten away from me a little bit. I'll keep it short and sweet in future.

46God you sound like the most boring, winy, pretentious and fun hating persons ever. Did you stay in your chalet most of the weekend reading books and maybe have half a shandy.
Lighten up a little.

ToM - If it wasn't for the last minute nothing would get done.

It's very, very easy to make other people less happy or comfortable than they would otherwise be; much more interesting and demanding would be acting in a way that enhanced somebody's day.
Shit-faced studenty wankers banging pans and waking people who would rather be asleep is boring, cuntish behaviour.
Simple as that.

kids on drugs?!?! inconsiderate?!?! WHUH?!?!
this just sucks to hear all this. i hope chicago is nothing like this, audience-wise. sorry to hear anybody's rock fun has been ruined. i've seen this happen a couple times while Chris Brokaw is playing acoustic guitar. THAT'S fucking rude, talking loud enough for it to agitate the *performer*.
this talk of ATP reminds me of something i've seen on JBTV... in the past few weeks, he's been airing raw, unedited video footage from the Lollapalooza series that happened here in the states 10 years ago, give or take. and by the 3rd year, there's parts where he's just talking casually to the cameraman about how it's become weird and bad and overly commercial. it kinda sucks how something cool can catch on huge with all the wrong people and become crappy. it's a shame that it sounds like that might have happened/be happening to ATP.
