Covers that are better than the original

Cover that stains the original and almost makes me not want to listen to it again:

Smooth Criminal, Alien Ant Farm

I have heard a Dave Matthews Band Cover of All Along The Watchtower.

This has to be the coldest, biggest fist to the cock ever.

WTF!!

And to be constructive, that self titled Bob Dylan album is chock full of them. Not going to lie, I'm not familiar with a lot of the originals, but the one's I am are winners...

You're no good- Bob Dylan - Jesse Fuller

House of the Rising Sun- this is one I'm not certain who originally wrote it, and where I've heard it before, but I assosciate it with Bob Dylan because of this version. I give it tie status on grounds that I can't pinpoint original.

I love the Devo cover too.

And the Low+Dirty Three cover (off the fishtank album) of 'Down by the River'- Neil Young I like a lot as well. This is a tie though.

I'm gonna stab in and say all this SATISFACTION talk is bothering me slightly. The DEVO version is amazing yes, but so is the STONES' one when you sit and think about it/listen to it. I'm giving them a tie anyway.

The Cardigans doing 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' i think is slightly better than the original.
Blue Cheer doing 'Summertime Blues' is also better i think (just by a nose though).
Galaxie 500 - 'Listen the Snow is Falling'
Todd Rundgren - 'Cool Jerk' (from A Wizard / A True Star)
Boredoms doing the Mekons' 'Where Were You?' (listed on the boredoms record as "7 --> boriginal")

And only because i hate the original so much, Guitar Wolf butchering "i just wanna make love to you".
You're a shit DM and i want my pizza money back.

Was waiting for someone to mention the Boredoms cover of the Mekons.

I really love Urge Overkill's cover of "Wichita Lineman" - in fact, I also love Ray Charles' cover of same. Probably because I think "Wichita Lineman" is an incredible song.

PJ Harvey's rendition of "Is That All There Is?"

Killdozer's cover of "Nasty" always makes me smile - I think it's better than the entire THIS ONE'S FOR THE LADIES album.

The Flaming Lips do an incredible cover of "Can't Get You Out Of My Head", which is another song I love in its original form.
I make music/I also make pretty pictures

Leadbelly is the first performer of the song that I'm aware of.

This makes sense. Every song I've ever liked but can't remember where I first heard it is a leadbelly song. Every last one.

The record gives credit to Dave Van Ronk accompanied by the quote, "I had always known Risin' sun but never really knew I knew it until I heard Dave sing it." This is far from conclusive, but seems to support the Leadbelly theory.

Tie for now, further research pending...

thanks for the imput Edward.

I'm also seeing Woodie Guthrie as a potential candidate. This makes sense too, he has a lot of songs of above mentioned character also. Dave Van Ronk seems to be in good company.
