I'm torn on
Fiction too. It's got a few hits and far more clunkers. From what I gather, this was their most rushed album. Sounds like they are trying to grab marketshare from Japan or Talk Talk (or something akin to that). Yeah, some of the lyrics are definitely craptastic, but not a whole bunch more than their contemporaries (i.e.- Pere Ubu, Echo and the Bunnyfarts, the Sound, etc..).
Still, don't write em off entirely- give
Sleep No More and
Waiting for A Miracle a chance. And the Peel Session album too.
Sleep No More is one of the most intense and bleak albums I can think of in the post-punk genre. And the elevator shaft recorded drums... cool.
The album cover art doesn't bother me. Torn paper art. Whoa. So what? Most of the stupid photos on the cover of all the first few Echo albums are just as gae. At least this has some abstration going on. Isn't it just par for the course that early eighties bands have crappy album art?
