One difficulty with the "I'm singing from a character's point of view rather than my own.." approach is that it's difficult to establish that context in songs that last a few minutes and aren't necessarily surrounded by other songs that help with the task.
Don Giovanni and Scarpia (in Tosca) have some pretty awful things to say, but Mozart and Puccini had time to put that stuff in context.
Does this mean that I think G'nR should write an opera around "One in a Million"? No. Sometimes bad art is just bad.
