The remaster of White Light White Heat totally ruined the sonics of "The Gift" that was on the original pressing. Shame. I love that fuckin' song.

All my early Stones mono pressings are superior to the later stereo ones.
Agreed on all three points except the second (the 1971 re-mix of "Anthem of the Sun" is also inferior to the original mix, IMO - it shaves down a lot of the psychedelic edges and tries to make it sound more like the music the Dead were making in the early 70s). I enjoyed the most recent re-mastering of "WL/WH" though - in theory you'd think that if there was never an album that would benefit from sounding more hi-fi it'd be that one, but I like being able to split the two channels on "The Gift" without the bleed-through on my old vinyl pressing, and "Sister Ray" actually sounds even more vicious and biting on 45th anniversary CD than any other version I've heard.

Totally agree about the Stones though, especially the much maligned "Their Satanic Majesties' Request" on which the mono mix is more aggressive and driving than the stereo and much the better for it.
I hate music, it's got too many notes.

They'd upgraded from some ancient muffled ceiling-mounted speaker to a Sonos wireless setup.

The endless loop of Bon Jovi, The Outfield, the Eagles, etc. was not made any better.
I always picture the ideal dentists' office music just being Hall & Oates Greatest Hits on repeat all day, every day.

That would work for me-- at the grocery store and the tire repair place too!

In the early 2000s it was remastered with the correct speed and that really bothered me. It was better "borken"!
I have this same thing with Sonic Youth's Bad Moon Rising. I had the cassette for a decade before they reissued the CD. I'm still not convinced the CD has the master playing at the right speed.
Kind of an aside, but actually, your tape is probably fine and your ears are somewhat correct. The Geffen CD pressing of this album is kinda fucked up. There's a very strange fluttery sort of effect on the vocals and on some of the guitars, probably due to a mastering defect or a problem w/the tapes. The track indexing is also off. The speed is ok, though. These problems are certainly not present on the old Homestead vinyl pressings, and I'd imagine that the old cassette versions sound normal, too. No clue about more recent pressings in any format.
