One other thing...

Near the end of the King Diamond tune "A Mansion In Darkness"?

Right after the "Ensemble..." sorta part at the end, it proceeds to go out in a blaze of glory.

Those artificial harmonics that open said blaze of glory really feel like they are the only possible thing that could have kicked it off.

(4:20)

(No, seriously. The part kicks off at 4:20...)

Mr. Andy LaRoque, who one Chuck Schuldiner later sought out as a session player.

The pinch harmonic first came to my attention in the Death song Open Casket, where it seems like Chuck was experimenting with it and would just end a phrase with one:

For entirely subjective reasons, to me, the pinch harmonic is just an emphatic "weird sound in a heavy song" moment rather than a technique thing, which I guess is why I like it.

It's a little too "hot doggin" for most of the music I play but I stole a trick from a friend who worked much harder on guitar than I did. You repeatedly play a single note pinch harmonic every time but move your picking hand from bridge neighborhood toward neck neighborhood while repeatedly striking the note. The note stays the same but the harmonic shifts. It's fun.

Uh... my brain pulled out Zakk Wylde, John Christ and Tommy Victor, none of whom I really like as players. And the pinch harmonics are the least appealing aspect, it's always a bit dumb sounding IMO (except that main riff on 'Do You Wear the Mark', even I must bow down at the altar there).

I prefer an artificial harmonic ala Godflesh, Killing Joke or GoF (what Gill does on 'Paralysed' on the 4th and 5th frets is one of my favourite combination of sounds).

That said, I'm kinda certain my attitude is shaped by the fact I still can't constantly knock out a PH on cue (they sound great as accidents during intense soloing), whereas I can reliably riff w/ AH easy.

NC wf personal failings as a musician
(Seriously, I am not trying to give anyone any serious grief...)

Any time that a person is just lightly resting a fretting finger onto an open string, and then letting go of the pressure after they pick said string?

That person has played a natural harmonic.

Anything else is an artificial harmonic.

That said, it's all Eddie when it comes to natural harmonics. Having said that, I would add the opening of this number to the playing that you listed

As for artificial harmonics sounding "Dumb..."?

What else would be the right sound during the chorus of "Lighting Strikes"?

I even googled to double check I was using the right terminology... no you're 100% correct, I meant to refer to natural harmonics. My bad.

That's easily my least favorite Ozzy record, though. A plodding, clumsy, L.A. biz mersh-metal-meh of a record. You won't win me round there.

No biggie. I think that I may be one of five folks on the face of the planet that said distinction matters even one bit to.

As for Jake, he is my Ozzy guitarist. Totally get that said stretch is not for everyone.

I personally lifted this bit off of Vernon Reid back in the day. It is right up there with swiping the back side of your pinky up towards the neck while playing something from the "Hammer On..."/"Pull Off..." corner of things.
