One episode into season 3. The Trent Reznor soundtrack alienated my wife. I was down, but I actually like ambient music etc and she doesn't fuck with it. For a show that has prominently featured snappy needle drops it was a risk.

As per the high drama, I keep coming back to my brief time working in a kitchen. For those without the wiring (i.e. me) you look at those tireless, hardcore kitchen lifers and wonder what kind of person can tolerate that type of intensity, stress and repetition (they remind me of nurses in some ways). I think the way the show examines each of the characters is an interesting, heightened/dramatized look at the types of folks who can actually hang with that work.

There is a Citizen Kane level arch drama to explain Carmy's ambition and his dysfunctional family. The car crashing into the living room is pure TV but there's a recognizable Midwestern, grin and bear (sorry) it flavor to the family drama. It comes down to whether the drama feels believable or soapy. For me it teeters at times but I enjoy its miserable masochism for the most part.

Jamie Lee Curtis is soooo good, made me so uncomfortable in the episode in which Sugar goes into labor.

Also, who the fuck would allow their staff to continue to not break down boxes BEFORE they get put in the bin?

She has been fucking amazing on this show and sugar is my favorite other character. I loved that episode. JLC rules. The show is good. Not perfect but what show other than 30 rock is? I'll also watch Olivia Coleman do anything. If you haven't watched peep show or Flowers... Do it. She is the best.

I've dug into Season 3 a bit more. Episodes 2 and 3 were just great, and I wish this show would stay in the kitchen and just focus on that tension and the pretty shots. What it does best. (Hahahahahah, out of context, this sounds so 1950s sexist even though I'm mostly talking about the show's male characters!)

Agree that Sugar is kinda the unexpected highlight. She, along w/the guys playing Richie and his ex-wife's fiancee, are probably the finest non-guest actors on the show.

The fucking dopey handyman duo needs to go. Just... why? They were fine as satellite characters in other seasons, but now? Mugging bullshit, esp. w/that big cartoon lug they just introduced.

Episodes 4 and 5 are losing me again though, thanks to the high drama and musical montages again. I'll stay w/it for now, though.

Same thoughts here. I watched the first several episodes and while I assume the show gets better, it annoyed me enough not to want to check out more.
