While I don't feel it is my word to use, I appreciate its meaning through many decades of use from the Jim Crow South up until its ignominious co-option by clueless white liberals in the twenty-teens.

In case you're curious, this is the earliest recorded usage of the word "woke" in the context of social justice.

It's from the Smithsonian Folkways Collection, a brief interview following a performance of the song "Scottsboro Boys" by Leadbelly.

@ 4:27: "I advise everybody to be a little careful when they go down through there. Stay woke, keep their eyes open."
