Noise-Rock Solicitations

I will have to kindly disagree w/ my colleague kerble and say that Wolf Eys are the shit and while uttery obnoxious live (a finer compliment for a band of their ilk I cannot think of), I think they transcend the "noise" tag w/ their howling-open-the-gates-of-hell blare to true greatness. The disperate array of opinions on them (people love 'em or hate 'em) solidifies my opinion of them. More noise than "noise-rock" but still worth investigating

I am talking about what you call "noise'. I enjoy that too but as we seem to agree, there is no ability to discern amongst the folks to show up to the gigs. The fact that Wolf Eyes is among the better-known acts reveals the sad state of that realm.

Yeah, we definitely are in agreement. The problem with the noise scene that i've witnessed thus far is that there seems to be no standards with which to control quality. I mean, rock music is so pervasive in popular culture that it's pretty easy for someone to determine what they consider to be a shit band, but noise is so underground that i think a lot of the "casual" noise fans (can there really be "casual" noise fans?) will just take whatever's dished out and love it because it's noise, when in fact there is a WORLD of difference between becoming adept at crafting feedback sculptures and just going up on stage and banging shit.

Last year i saw this dude named Crank Sturgeon make a wall of sound by taking a fucking contact mic and tape measure and running it through effects. It was so hyper-sensitive that the dude just had to scream INTO THE TAPE MEASURE and it vibrated enough for the contact mic to pick it up and create an ear-piercing volume. Now THAT's what i call art!!

YES! Thank you for reminding me of what Emil's name was--I can never remember it. he was amazing as well. So was Prurient, who did more with a mic and a wall of speakers than i thought possible. This was in a basement in Milwaukee.

Sorta funny story--my girlfriend, who has been forced to endure many a mediocre noise act that my band has been thrown on a bill with, came along to this show at the behest of our friend Alex, who had set up the show, and after seeing all three of these brilliant artists, she looked at me and said, 'OK, i finally GET noise now.'

todd from voltage makes little LED electronic project things that work off the sound.

Thanks for the Camp Gay link! I always seem to forget about that place.

I'm not sure if this is in the same vein, but at Peter Jones gallery, 1806 W. Cuyler, they have what you call "Circuit Bending." The point is to collect old, discarded, found toys/electronics/etc., and manipulate them in such a way as to control noise and function. I've never been because I'm usually not sober.
