i know no one wants to talk about slint these days, but i still like the "oh, uh, okay..." which starts 'tweez'.
and i like interpol. i like the first one more than antics. i do not weat t-shirts over button-down shirts and ties, though. t-shirt goes on the inside.
and i think 'break' by fugazi was mentioned above. also one of the best intros.

I've got three -
The Silverfish song that starts with a sample of "Jolene" by Dolly Parton, abruptly interrupted with the best wail of "Motherfucker!" that I've yet heard.
"Night Goat" by the Melvins. To be snobby about it, I have to say I prefer the AmRep 7" version.
"Alienation" by Zeni Geva is so great, I got to go listen to it right now.
Wait! Not Yet! I just remembered
"Dragonaut" by Sleep. That's one tasty taco riff. Too bad the album reeks of weed.
There's also the Doom sample at the beginning of "Dopethrone" by Electric Wizard, the truly frightening guitar thing at the beginning of "Mighty Trust Crusher" by Godflesh, the kazoo thing off the live version of "You Must Learn" by BDP, the first 47 seconds of "The Running Board" by the Dillinger Escape Plan,
and wait! What about "Distracted" by Helmet?
"Wrath from above" by Immortal (oh man it's hot)?
"The Beginning and the End" by Isis?
"Hot Butter N All" by Lou Courtney?
"You Don't Wanna Fuck with Me" by ODB?
BRW - Are you out there? WHAT ABOUT "Cold Lampin' With Flava?" Holy Crapamole! How come no one's talking about that great sample!?
"Ghosts" by the Shellac Attac?
"Angel of Death" by Slayer?
Ok, ok. These are all pretty great. But really, "Alienation" is the best of them. God, that is a great way to start a record.
So sez me,
= Justin

Angriest_Dragon wrote:Brett, thank you for reminding me of the beautiful intro to "Song Remains The Same" by Zeppelin oddly off of the best album they ever did which is House of the Holy.
I can't believe there's even any debate over this.
Houses clearly tops the list.

During the whole Working Holiday singles deal Crain had a side called "Coalmine #666", when I first heard this song the rhythm was so off kilter and it took me more than a minute to get into this song...so good, so weird. Otherwise....
Archers of Loaf "Lowest Part is Free"
Bad Brains "Pay to Cum"
Mule "Mississippi Breaks'

Pretty sure the intro to that song ranks in my top 10 best moments in music.
agreed. and Brown Sugar is another badass. those are both way, way up there for me.
every time i listen to the Unwound song "October All Over" on an airplane, it really sticks with me. it opens up really beautifully, so i will mention it here since it's been intermittently reappearing in my head for over a week now and i enjoy how it establishes itself.
fugazi-wise, what about Reclaimation? counting everything up to the tempo change into the verse riff. when it opens up, and then that bass comes in... woah.
polvo's got some nice ones, too many to pick from! some of my favorites are Fast Canoe, Fractured (Like Chandeliers), the opening of Every Holy Shroud, and of course, Thermal Treasure is a monster. an absolutely freakish monster. so purty, these treasures!

One of my all-time favorite songs and definitely one of the best intros. I should have put that on my list!
What's the intro? The two beats of drums? The whole song seems like an intro to me.
I'll list my favorite Fugazi intros, since it's the only band that's ever mentioned on here that I've heard of before:
suggestion
two beats off
song #1
break in
exit only
runaway return
Cassevetes (maybe the best fugazi song.. maybe the best _song_)
Instrument
Target
Foreman's Dog
Yeah...good point. However, being that it's the first song on the album, it could be said that the entire song is a great intro. As for Cassavetes being their best song...I don't know if I agree, but it's very, very high on the list...right under Epic Problem. That's just my opinion though.
