Sounds blown out of proportion.
Those guys write good songs. The drummer is solid, and the vocals are beautiful. Wide range, as well as great lyrics (most of the time). The arrangements are sparse at times, but I don't see the more "meaty" or heavily textured songs as being pretentious or faux-anything. It sounds like it's all there for a reason (to me). Plus, Johnny Greenwood gets some interesting sounds on the guitar. Some of it is alien sounding and non-specific.
They do have a lot of douche bag fans... i'll agree with that.

Glad to see Radiohead is well respected here, as I would expect, and as they should be. They've done all that can be done with rock, so it's time to take up the laptop and bust out with some loops and digital noise.
Radiohead are the most amazing band ever. That song "Creep" really touches me. I'm so alone in the world, and that songs feels my pain! That little hint of distorted guitar chugging right before the chorus! Wow! That makes the predictability of when that chorus kicks in, almost unpredictable!
Kid-A is a masterpiece. These guys did a unique fusion of art and rock that has never been done before. They use this new instrument known as a mellon tron that is a new-fangled sort of sampler or something? Who knows. The plans are top secret -- for their eyes only!
Glad to see 62% favor Radiohead! Yeah... New Order, Radiohead, The Cure, The Smiths, The Wonderstuff, Fine Young Cannibals, oh, I could go on and on. These are the great alternative bands. They sold the most records, and they are the greatest!

I was talking to Richard D. James the other day. He still hasn't gotten that royalty check from Thom.
Still, Transistornoggin ain't crap. Jesus don't make no junk. And Jesus really digs "Street Spirit."

aside from the production trickery, the smug nigel godrich bag of tricks, i have enjoyed much radiohead. interesting chord changes, neat guitar playing, tight drumming, sarcastic lyrics, classical orchestration, nice bass lines.
unrelated to the music, i really enjoyed their v 1.0 websites from back in the day when the net was in its infancy. really cool stuff. i remember scanned drawings, faxes, random shit just dripping with sarcasm, circa 1996-97. pretty cool.
haven't heard recent stuff, but i dug the bends and ok computer and the airbag singles. didn't really dig the electronica dabbling much though on the later stuff. fuck autechre working with radiohead.
not crap.

I hate the first record, so I skipped the second when it came out. When I heard OK Computer, I thought it was great, so I checked out The Bends. Turns out it's a great rock record. Not much new there, but I got the feeling that they made the record they wanted to make. That bit of freedom and success led to them taking some risks and making OK Computer.
That seems to have plotted their course. Every time they stretch out a little, they get a positive response. I respect any band that dosn't keep churning out the same stuff.
Radiohead keeps jumping out of the Safe Zone. Bands that are making money hand over fist rarely do that. When they do change, they go "back to their roots," (read: write 3 chord songs that suck) or do a bunch of covers because they stop being inspired.
Radiohead did some cool stuff on the web early on. They are great about showing nerdy studio shots -total fan porn.
They seem to give a shit that they actually have fans...that give them money and stuff! I don't get an ivory tower vibe from them.
The documentary doesn't show them in a good light. Apparently it was a rough time because they were getting pulled in a lot of different directions and it was overwhelming. However, it's pretty cool that they let it get released. After 4 years, the MC5 documentary is still being held up because someone, I'm guessng Wayne, is pissy about something. The Radiohead guys let that film come out, warts and all.
What I got out of it is that being in a popular band is interminably boring as shit sometimes, followed by periods of being followed by Japanese people. It's not exactly "we're coming to your town to help you party down."
They pulled through it, figured stuff out, and seem happy now. Why shouldn't they be? They get to play around with cool instruments, have complete creative control, and answer to no one. They also seem well grounded. Not that it matters, but a pal of mine in England says that she occasionally sees one of them driving around, on an errand. She told me they drive little cars and they drive themselves. Nobody deserves a merrit badge for this, but you have to admit, it's unexpected and "normal."
Some of their new stuff is great, some is not so great, but they are doing what any band that has options should do: playing the music they want to play, offering it up to people, and not worrrying about it if some people think it's too "challenging."
I'm a little jealous actually.
