Band:Pearl Jam

I was teaching in Missouri in the early nineties, and as it was summer time, we had the windows open. A car went by blaring loud rock music, and a few of my students started bopping their heads. I decided to fuck with them a bit and said, "What's that?" A girl in the front row said, "Uh...Pearl Jam!" "I should have guessed," I said, at which point the room erupted with shouts of "Come on, man," "You don't like Pearl Jam?" etctera.

"Look," I said, "I've got nothing against Pearl Jam. But as an old school punk rocker, I resent the suggestion that so-called 'alternative' music is the new punk rock or anything. To me, Pearl Jam isn't the Sex Pistols of the 90's, they're the Foreigner of the 90's, just a corporate rock band, and I don't see them as being any more revolutionary than Alanis Morrisette."

Everyone threw hands up in disgust, except for the girl in the front row, who said, "Alanis is cool."

Eddie Vedder. He's our Bono, no?

Ooof. Candlebox is terrible. I curse you, The Kid.

But The Killers are worse. You see, The Killers are just terrible and depressing. They have no redeeming qualities whatsoever. However, Candlebox at least reminds me of Collective Soul (if only because they were contemporaries and their band names both begin with "C") -- and I can laugh without irony at that funny little "yeah" part in Collective Soul's "Shine".

I know that's not much. I mean, I'm not cutting out this review and sticking it on the fridge if I'm Candlebox. However, it's enough to keep them a solid furlong behind The Killers in the Crap Derby.

Fun fact: Pearl Jam's "Ten" and Alanis Morisette's "Jagged Little Pill" have sold a collective 28 million copies.

Mr. W, you can't defend Candlebox as being better than the Killers on their own terms, but instead offer a forced connection to Collective Soul? Who sucked soooo much in their own right?
Maybe for me it comes down to the fact that the Killers are clearly ripping off better bands than Candlebox was. When I linger on Q101 for a few minutes, I'd rather listen to a very dumbed-down, radio friendly version of Wire's/Joy Division's poppiest moments than listen to a very dumbed down version of Pearl Jam that isn't really radio friendly at all, in that it has zero hooks.
I really didn't expect someone to take the Candlebox bait, so propers to you for having the balls.
But come on, I mean, Candlebox! Candle-fucking-box!?! I remember a print ad for their second album, billing them as "just another band you can't live without." This ad undoubtedly sparked a few suicides.
