What it does is it nips in the bud the idea that "everything will be better when I move to XXXXX."

Sure, some things might be different, but this is a global problem that affects nearly every country with an internet connection.

If people want to have their "own facts," they'll have their "own facts," whether they're in your modest home town in the Midwest or on the moon.

There is a hilarious Todd Barry bit about Tom's of Maine deodorant. Sometimes my TOM makes me smell way worse than my BO. I had a half used one as a backup that i tried the other day and almost barfed at my odor after an hour or so.

Doing one's "own research" is code for: watched some videos on YouTube, read some Twitter threads, listened to some podcasts, almost all of which were informed and created by people with no working understanding of the Scientific Method, large sample sizes, and peer-reviewed research.

No, you've missed the point, even though it was spelled out for you. We do not all "do our own research." Unless if everyone but me is secretly a scientist with access to a state of the art lab doing their own clinical trials with large sample sizes and subjecting their findings to deep analysis and peer review. This is not just a question of semantics.

We might all try to "inform ourselves" about the ongoing situation. We might all have our own opinions about any number of things related to COVID-19. But that's not actual research. And depending on who one is, where he's getting his information, and what conclusions he draws, he might not be that informed at all, in the sense that his conclusions are based on the facts.

The facts, as of today, are that vaccines do, have, and will save lives.

Unless if everyone but me is secretly a scientist with access to a state of the art lab doing their own clinical trials with large sample sizes and subjecting their findings to deep analysis and peer review. This is not just a question of semantics.

And even if we take it in the broader, academic, secondary form of research: Are we only talking peer reviewed journals? What's their acceptance rate? When you read publications what are your parameters for statistical analysis, confidence intervals, sample size etc?

That kind of research is very much about your education level. The majority of Americans don't know how to do it. That's the work of someone with a Masters degree, learning from the people mentioned above who have Doctorates. You can't everyman, fucking youtube your way into outsmarting everyone.

I accept that some sources are better than others and some people who claim to do their own research are really really dumb. But they'd still be doing dumb things even if they didn't claim to do their own research. Right? (I'm thinking of Kyrie Irving and the like.) So really you're just telling Kyrie Irving to shut up and listen to YOUR source, which for all we know is just as wrong as his. (See the video I posted in the other thread.) You'll never get through to him that way if your source is already on the record as being non-credible. He may be lazy. He may have a few screws loose. But he knows when someone is bullshitting him.
