As far as I'm concerned, the Twins aren't actively shopping Santana, but rather just taking the offers as they come should anything bowl them over. I'd speculate that he's going to be resigned by the Twins.

Hunter made about an average of $10m the last three years - he's off the books. Nathan and his roughly $5.5/6m should be off the books after next year. Mauer's signed through 2010. They're opening a new stadium. No reason financially or otherwise they shouldn't and/or couldn't hold onto Santana.

But they are. He turned down their 4 year $80 million extension around thanksgiving that would have bumped his 08 pay from $13 million to $20 million. That indicates he's pretty serious about getting that $25-28 million contract from one of the big market teams.

It's pretty much trade him now, or enjoy 08 with him and those 09 draft picks in compensation.

I have a hard time justifying paying a pitcher, much less a position player, this kind of money. This is one of those rare instances where I tend to agree with Jerry Reinsdorf never wanting to give pitchers more than a 3-year contract. I'm too lazy to look this up, but I don't recall the Cardinals or White Sox paying their pitchers this well when they won their World Series rings.

If Santana makes 32 starts a season, that is $875,000 a game. He's a great pitcher and all, but I don't think he's worth that kind of money. And when you look at the bust that Barry Zito was with his price tag, how can any GM other than the Yankees or Red Sox's even fathom that kind of cash. Shit, the Cubs are charging $80 a seat for their premium box seats next season and they haven't won anything in 100 years.

If only my arm wasn't a wet noodle with a messed up rotator cuff to boot...
meh

Reports are now stating that the Angels are in on the mix, the Angels are "denying" they are in on the talks.

They are also reporting that the Twins have told the red sox they want to "complete a deal by the end of the day" and have cleared a roster spot, reportedly in anticipation of the Bosox trading 5 players for Santana, hopefully its Julio Lugo ;)

A big fucking deal!!!

Cameron Maybin has the chance to be just an awesome, awesome player, but how many players are on the tier above "perennial MVP candidate"? Maybe Pujols and A-Rod and . . . that's it? So if the realistic best case scenario for Maybin is to be a player the caliber of Miguel Cabrera, and if it's still very much an open question as to whether that happens, I guess you have to pull the trigger if you're Detroit, right? You're right in the middle of your window for a title, and that's one of the top 10 hitters in the game. Still young and entering his prime, too.

While salary is always a consideration, bats like Miguel Cabrera's simply aren't out on the open market. And if Cabrera costs something like $28 million total over the next two years, that's like Aaron Rowand money in this market. Teams should have plenty to spend, given the current ratio of revenue to salary (as detailed at Baseball Prospectus today or this week or last week or whenever). It's tough to say how much money is worth to Detroit -- even if it's easy to say that it's always the primary consideration for the Florida Marlins -- but they've probably got more than enough spare change to cushion a move like this without compromising themselves elsewhere.

Willis is another issue. He's living off of cache as much as anything at this point. Perhaps Comerica is a good fit since HRs seem to be the root of his troubles, but he's also moving to the tougher league. Miller is physically impressive, but then so was Andy Sisco, and there's no sure thing with pitchers no matter what the pedigree. Still, I'd rather have Miller for the next 3 years, and definitely for the next 5.

I'd probably do this trade if I'm sitting in the GM chair of either team. Obviously Rabelo is nothing much, but getting additional prospects from Detroit should just be icing on the cake for Florida. It's hard to imagine a better setup for rebuilding then getting Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller, and it's hard to imagine a better way to cash in your Showbiz tickets than by acquiring Miguel Cabrera.

I'm getting anxious for this Red Sox-Twins deal to get done. If the Sox can get Santana and not have to give up Ellsbury that'd be wickid awesome.
