I have some ebay gift certificates to use up so I’m going to get a beyer mic at a discount.
What sounds more useful, a pair of M201s or M88? I already have one of each. And a M69.
I feel like I use the 201 more often, but I think a second M88 would be more useful for drums. Stereo 201s sounds pretty cool - I have wanted to try those on overheads - though for the type of sources I would use those on I have sdc and ribbon options as well.
I have a pair of M88's but not M201's. I do like them and want one or 2 though. I will say for the things that M88s are good for they are GREAT for, but for the stuff they aren't great for, they aren't good at all. It's. kinda weird cause even different tom tuning can make or break that. I do love them though. M201 are more of a "57ish" mic to me in that I think they kinda sound pretty good on almost anything, but Great on less. Kinda always good though. I know people like them on snare a lot and I do too, but they don't sound hugely better than a 57 there to me, just a little better, maybe little less pinched sounding. Probably more useful but less fun choice than the M88's.
I actually think M69s are underrated and sound kinda great most of the time. I'd maybe rather have them than 421's for all the same purposes. Great on toms and guitar cabs.

I don't mean to scramble your plan, but neither of these mics scream pair to me. Sure I could easily have one 201 on snare and another on guitar, or one m88 on kick, another on bass amp. But I'd be looking for new flavors. Like maybe a really cool LDC.
I'm a stickler for using the same type of mic on top of both toms. There is something about the color of the impact being different that really bothers me so every mic I buy with toms in mind, I buy 2. It's the ONLY reason I have 2 AKG D112's, there was a time I was into them on Floor Tom, so I had to use one on Rack Tom too.
Also, my Rhodes is Stereo, so a pair of M201 would be nice.
