TIL: the factory that builds the high-end sony studio mics and headphones in Japan is a joint venture between Sony and a social welfare corp that does job training for folks with disabilities. Over 60% of the people who work in that factory (ie, the folks that assemble the C800G etc) live with disabilities.

I was already curious about the C80 mic (hence finding that article), and this makes me all the more likely to buy one.

Got to use those Helios pres mentioned above for the first time today, recording drums in our practice space. Since there wasn't a control room I didn't want to subject our drummer to hours of "let me see how far I can push this before it sounds distorted" gain tweaking, so I just sort of felt out the levels, checked to make sure it wasn't obviously distorting, and rolled with it.

Probably just confirmation bias, but they do sound pretty solid. Used the four channels on Mono OH (M160), wurst/knee mic (SM57), and stereo front-of-kit (monoprice ribbons).

AEA is making a figure 8 ribbon mic called an N13 that fits between the N22 I have and the N8, which they seem to like at Electrical.

The N22 works on everything, but the one I got isn’t meant to be used very far away at all, though it is durable enough to be used as a live sound mic if you want. It’s cool to have a figure 8 that doesn’t pick up so much room. It also sounds good pointed sort of around the bridge of an acoustic, which is a position I haven’t gotten to work with any other mic.

I’ve been way more interested in recording acoustic lately, just because it’s kind of more fun and ‘alive,’ since the instrument can move in relation to the mic, kind of like a singer. Maybe I could sell my N22 for the N13 if I felt like going further down that route one day.

Dang. The Sam ash in San Diego was kind of depressing so not surprising but I liked having another store other than guitar center. While I like having boutique stores even more, I don’t know if this will give room for that or just sales whisper into internet-air.

Dang. I thought it was just certain stores.

I understand that people like to shit on giant guitar store, and they can be very problematic. However, these stores are the biggest customers for music gear companies. It's no secret that for the U.S. my employer's two biggest customers are Sweetwater and Guitar Center/Musician's friend.

So, Sam Ash closing is likely to mean one of two things.
1. Their purchases from gear companies are absorbed mainly by GC/MF, Sweetwater, AMS, Amazon, etc. This give all those companies even a bigger hold.
2. Their purchases disappear, which means that music gear manufactures make less money, lose employees, and develop gear more slowly.

The best thing for helping small shops thrive is for MI companies to eliminate minimum orders for dealers, and to keep and strengthen MAP (minimum asking price) rules/laws.
