You don't have to figure out the social and political ramifications of this argument. Life is short. People are hungry. Give 'em some money for food. It's a bit of change, for chrissake. If you can't afford it, that's a different story. The cruelty level of some of the comments is disturbing; the poll results--shocking.

I certainly don't give to every homeless person I see (I see a lot), but you do what you can. Help a fellow human being out, ya know?

You are actually generous to other people all the time, you just don't mention it because other people don't need to know about it. We know this because you mentioned it to let us know about it.

If we think being generous to other people is a good idea, then we aren't being generous enough to hold that opinion, as far as you, an un-generous person, are concerned. We shouldn't be all high and mighty when there's more we could be doing.

When you play the "baffle them" card by suggesting that you are both above the discussion and in it, both sincere and insincere, both earnest and just saying things for effect, you are merely insulating yourself from criticism. This also invites all of us to write you off entirely.

Being generous because it makes you feel good to be generous is not a good reason to not be generous.
