I have been listening to this song called "Just The Same" by a band called Big Dismal.

I saw this video today on an airplane.

An airplane.

I cannot stop listening to this song today. I am fascinated by the badness of this song.

It's really bad. It's a really bad idea for a song, even as a joke, because this joke would not be funny.

It's almost like someone asked me to identify everything that's bad about a "rock" band and then built a band based on my answers.

And "Big Dismal". Wtf kind of band name is that?

And this song features the line -- and I am not making up any of this -- "I didn't mean to hurt you".

And I kind of want to beat up the lead singer just for saying "yey-uh" in that fake Vedder voice as many times as he does. And for the hat. And for agreeing to stand in front of that "LEARN TO FLY" sign.

This terrible Creed rip-off band!

I'm listening to them a lot today!

Surely they cannot be serious!

Someone mentioned that Grifters song "Eureka IV"--I could not agree more. Damn near every time I head that song I get goosebumps. The organ is fucking perfect.

For me "Victoria" by the Kinks is pretty unbeatable--I just simply don't tire of hearing it. "Out on the Tiles" also, for totally different reasons. "Insomnia" by SKWM is pretty tops, too.

But, yeah, that fucking Grifters song. Jesus, that's a great song.

Great band, too.

I'm pleasantly surprised to find a number of other folks here who share my fondness for this song. And in listening to it repeatedly.

About four years ago, I was in a record store in St. Louis while on tour. I'd been searching for Giant Sand's Glum when I stumbled upon a used copy of The Grifters EP. I'd recalled how often I used to listen to an old roommate's copy just to hear "Eureka I.V.", so I picked it up for myself.

After the show we decided to drive overnight to Knoxville. I put on my headphones and listened to the disc. I couldn't get past the "Eureka I.V" (the first song), I just kept replaying it over and over. Till daybreak. It remains one of my favorite experiences of music listening as an adult. Needless to say, it's very easy to get worn down, tired, and generally overstimulated by music (and any other sounds) in the midst of a tour, but for a few hours that night/early morning I couldn't have been happier.

This song is also a great example (to me, at least) of a song whose lyrics don't necessarily "make sense" to me, but still manage to affect me after countless listens.

Got a couple more for ya:

"Saigon Sleeps" by Ativin
"Cage Me Safely" by Dis- (this has to be one of the most badass songs ever)
"The Cup Is Fierce" by Paul Newman
"Last Type" by The Speaking Canaries
"Luau" by Drive Like Jehu
"An Assassin" by The Sea And Cake
"What Is Your Landmass?" by Dianogah (Ground Rule Double version)
"Ticket" by Bear Claw (FUCK YOUR CITY!)

Isn't funny how music can have a memory effect on you? When I listen to many of these songs, I am reminded of something great I was doing when I heard this particular song. For example, I first heard that DLJ song on my way to see the Shellac/Dis-/Uzeda show at Clifton Cultural Center in Louisville, so now every time I hear that song, I think of that show (which was badass in itself - salut dirty birthday clown!).

(edited to add the mighty Bear Claw)
