So Steve chips in and asks me kindly to stop talking out of my ass.
This is, I think you'll agree, where it gets slightly personal.

I am really not interested in prolonging this conversation. Just this:

I don't think Steve asked you that because of your opinion on a Breeders record. I think Steve asked you that because you were making derogatory and grossly uninformed remarks about a personal friend of his. In other words, because you were talking out of your ass.

But hey, what do I know.

Uhhh, yeah, I see, I'm the first person on this board to make a derogatory remark, or what? Errr, actually, I don't see it as derogatory at all, though it might have been slightly misinformed.
However, if you take into account how people fall over each other to make derogatory remarks about - to pick someone at random - Courtney Love (for obvious reasons) it puts things into perspective. I'm sure Courtney is also the personal friend of someone, it just happens that this someone is not Albini. And though I think Courtney is bit of a pain in the ass, judging from the media coverage, I generally don't judge people by their affiliation with Albini. Which, if you take the David Lewis Gedge incident into account, Courtney does. Now I don't want to be associated with that kind of behaviour.

Albini's seminar at that recording school in Tennessee? Yes, I have seen it.

But I'm actually interested in the reason why people other than Steve Albini also share that view. Having actually had relations with both bands in question, instead of just listening to their records at home like we do, certainly puts Albini in an entirely different standpoint to judge them from.

Having first started listening to the Pixies around the time they broke up (Come on Pilgrim being my initial exposure to them) and having never had anything to do with their fanbase at the time, my views on that band were not colored by the periphery surrounding it.

I simply enjoy the band's early ouptut. Come on Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa, as well as parts of Doolittle were really vital and incredible, in my view, and I don't get why people call them a half-assed band (as long as their early material is the subject of the conversation).

Peripheral issues, such as whether or not Blank Francis is a conceited asshole, or how they handled the 'college radio' phenomenon, or how they signed to a major and started putting out shite, or the incredibly big (and possibly annoying) college-y fanbase they developed after breaking up do not change the enjoyability of their couple good records to me.

(Sorry for ranting)

What, you mean outside of this forum?
I have yet to meet them then.
I first saw the Pixies in 88 when they were supporting the Throwing Muses and it was one of the best Gigs I've ever been to. What I've seen of the Breeders doesn't come any close to that show at the Zeche in Bochum. But maybe I always caught the Breeders on a bad day and I have to admit that the Pixies at Reading 1991 where slightly disappointing.

to be honest, on the hole, i really don't care for Frank Black's lyrics. at times i even find them irritating, and what's more i just don't think he's as likable a vocalist as Kim Deal.

in a rock band the singer's personality --- as far as i can sense it through the music --- is very important to me. if i see a band and they're rocking out but the singer gets on my nerves, i'm not hesitant to dismiss them. granted, the Pixies had many brilliant moments, but whenever i've spent considerable time with their output i've had the feeling that it's a kind of vacant hodge podge despite all the incredible hooks.

On the list of people on EA who should quit talking out their ass, dimpfelmoser doesn't even crack the Hot 100.
