I was just talking to my friend about Karen O pulling a "Patti Smith" last year when she fell of a stage while "dancing" around and almost broke her neck and had to go to the hospital....my friend didn't know who Patti Smith was so the joke was lost on him.

I bet they will bond over their shared experience!

I saw Karen O with some frequency for a while at NYU before the YYY's when she was a student there. Some of her student multimedia work used to be online...maybe it still is. Nothing terribly special except it had an esthetic very much like the YYY's.

She was interesting looking then too. Part of it is her mixed Korean/Polish background. Some of it is her fashion choices.

I think of the YYY's as a band with a heavy art project aspect. I have no problem with her having a clothing designer. It's not like she's a model wearing runway haute couture. Art rockers have a history of wearing special clothes as part of a performance thing. It's part of the visuals.

The guitar player does some odd interesting things. Setting up a loop in real time and then playing against it is fun, and he does it pretty well.

When I first heard their entire first album I was surprised that along with their loud brash songs (which remind me of the Cramps as much as anything) there are some surprisingly sensitive songs.

I've yet to see them live in person, but I saw a full length concert in hdtv and good sound, and I thought they were pretty terrific in concert. There is no denying Karen o's charisma. She's alternately possessed, oddly-sexy, and rock'n'roll...and nobody is laughing at her more loudly than she is.

Not Crap. A creative good band.

You and I have the same thing in common: we played the same situation completely wrong.

A band I was in about 10 years ago played a small college. The whole place turned out. We had never played to 1000 people before.
A guy came up to me afterwards and said "you must be into the Church"
Yes, I said, I like them a lot. Pretty perceptive.
One of the profs asked me if I liked early Pink Floyd and "Nuggetts Music."
Indeed, I said, I do.
Two girls came up next, as I was packing up and said "You guys rock like The Dead."
"Rock Like the dead" is that a goth thing?
"No, like the Grateful Dead!"
That's unfortunate, I said, I can't stand them. We do? None of our songs are over 4 minutes and my guitar doesn't sound like an ant farting. We don't "jam". Rare solos only last 8 bars, and usually involve one feeding back note.
They looked at me blankly, smiled at each other and said "Well, thanks for playing. You guys were great!" and walked off.

They were really cute. They didn't look like hippies. They probably liked the Dead the way a lot of college kids do.
I should have said "Wow! Thanks a lot! Hey, uh, what are you two doing after this?"
That's what guys who want to meet girls do.

I think statements like these are just a foot in the door to the musician from someone who knows almost nothing about music (like most people).
My buddy Doug was at a party and a relatively cute girl came up to him and said
