What are you not understanding? The consequences of US foreign policy, Chavez's criticism of it, or my criticism of Galanter's blindered reflex reaction to Chavez? Do you need footnotes for the list of crimes I referenced? As a citizen, do you not feel a collateral self-loathing or at least a troubled conscience stemming from the crimes committed by those who have hijacked this country?

I didn't write any of that. I left my logged in window open and my kid was playing around.

Your kid has a dirty mouth. You're just a liar.

Hey Fuckhead! You leave my son? out of this.

any idea if his land redistribution system is working at all? i read an article on him in national geographic a few months ago and it looked like everyone in venezuela was still poor and irritable and hungry.

Let's go see what the money from the gringos and their SUVs bought. In barrios like this, there's a happy bounce. Chavez has finally tackled the health and education problems suffered by Venezuela's poor. He's imported 15,000 Cuban doctors and teachers, too. Before Chavez spread the oil wealth, 55% of the population lived in poverty. Now poverty is down by a third, and a million-and-a-half people have been taught to read.

Official statistics reveal some positive signs: 9.4 percent economic growth last year _ South America's highest _ and a poverty level that has declined from 48 percent of the population in 1997 to 37 percent today. Last year, Venezuelans' per capita income was about $4,900 compared to $42,000 for Americans.

Mark Weisbrot, an economist at the Washington-based Center for Economic and Policy Research, says that since Chavez took office, Venezuela has recovered from one of the world's worst economic declines when per capita income plummeted 35 percent between 1970 and 1998 _ worse than sub-Saharan Africa's record in the same period.

"That is what this government will be remembered for," he said.

Kicked someone's ass at the Asheville show. I hope he is a forum member. C'mon guy... Fess up.

No threats, though. Seriously. You never give someone notice if you want to fight them. Now he'll know and be ready if he runs across you in the tangible sense. You walk-up with an outstreched hand for a shake and then bring the uppercut (or a haymaker).

Chavez needs to read closely. I'm sure Chomsky is cringing. He's getting too fat for that socialist politic.

Chavez is a scumbag, and people who praise him just because he likes to call Bush a pendejo and because he's far left are kidding themselves. The man is in it for himself, and nobody else. He also has a tendency to say really stupid things that illustrate what a preening, self-righteous little shit he actually is.

Doesn't anyone remember the time when he said that the reason Condi Rice had a problem with him was because she was sexually frustrated? And then, after that, he polled his audience as to whether he should marry her. When his audience yelled "No," Chavez yelled, "Poor Condi, she doesn't know what she's missing!" Like a football coach trying to do standup. I don't like Condi at all - I think that she is basically a pawn - but Chavez is a misogynist, grandstanding, and moronic blowhard.

Second Edition: maybe read a recent interview with Chavez by Greg Palast before you write off the man and his economic plans, especially if it's mostly based on some half-ass slur against Condi Rice or his 'personality'. US leaders aren't the only ones permitted to talk shit. Stupid remarks flow both directions in this case, including veiled threats of assassination by the Bush administration. Nothing Chavez has said approaches 'Axis of Evil' as misguided rhetoric, especially when you view it in the context of underdog vs. perpetual aggressor.

The US backed a coup in Venezuela. The US has installed tyrants far worse than Chavez in Chile, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. The US believes they own this hemisphere. Chavez wants the IMF and World Bank out, the IMF that pillages economies and buries them in debt, Argentina most recently. Anyone who reveres Bolivar and Castro is to be expected to poke the US cage. Chavez can be a shock jock for all I care. Latin America desperately needs a financially independent counterbalance to our empire.

Chavez calls Bush a devil...

NEW YORK (AP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez visited a Harlem church Thursday and promised to double the amount of discounted heating oil his country ships to needy Americans. But he also took another swipe at President Bush.

A day after he called Bush "the devil" in a speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Chavez said of the president: "He's an alcoholic and a sick man."

Chavez received a round of applause from the crowd at Mount Baptist Olive Church, which included activists and other supporters as well as actor Danny Glover.

Bush has acknowledged that he had a drinking problem when he was young but gave up alcohol 20 years ago.

Chavez also called Bush's policies in Iraq criminal, adding he hopes Americans will before long "awaken" and elect a better president. The Venezuelan said that while he opposes Bush, the American people "are our friends."
