Utter Horseshit!
Taking a class doesn't mean someone is doing it for you, you have to learn somehow. If having a teacher explain it to you isn't DIY, then neither is reading a book someone else wrote sucka! WRITE THE BOOK YERSELF! As a matter of fact, invent your own flippin' language, chew trees shit pulp and make poopaper, write on it with your blood and teach yourself things you don't know. DUH.

I'm a workman. I'm pretty good at working with wood and metal. repairing things around the house, gardening, mechanical stuff.

I'm fixing mics and guitars but I keep my hands off electronics.

I guess now that I think about it and read your responses... a nice chunk of DIY. My best friend and I team up on most construction projects. The lady is a fashion major and as a result is a master seamstress, and I'm a handy enough nerd, so we get along pretty well.

Building furniture that isn't always pretty but is functional. Shelves, desk, snake cage, and countless shit to skate on are the first few to mind.

We screen-print clothes. The lady sews or knits clothing and fixes the rips in old stuff. She's the best cook of us as well.

We've done a few simple car tune-ups (dangerously I should add.) I can usually handle technology troubles or music equipment repair. Rewire, replace, whatever. Build/upgrade my own computers. I always do all of the recording. I'm always up late burning CD-R's and cutting inserts the night before a big show, too.

Oh, and Josh is practicing his tattooing to cover that realm.

Mayfair wrote:I like to think I do a lot myself in building my business but I do feel dumb not knowing how to fix my amps/electronics by myself, especially because I have loads of old broken crap. I have really wanted to take those classes at Specimen that teach you basics for amp and electronics and also one for setting up and maintaining your guitar or bass. I feel dumb not having such knowledge.

there are books for this information. probably a lot cheaper. taking classes is not d.i.y.

Getting electrocuted while trying to DIY-replace your filter caps is a pretty rockin way to DYIE!
