Anyone want to start an [Either or} Ska Vs. Metal?

I think Metal would SLAY Ska's happy-dancing ass.

(I don't hate ska. The Specials, Skatalites, Desmond Dekker, most trad. bands etc. are NOT CRAP. In my mind, the ratio of good to bad in Metal is much better than Ska.)

As long as we are going off on this tangent, my point is that it is not about any of us. We are all sharing the space. We obviously don't have universal ideas about what adds up to a good time, and people should realize that when they let go they are affecting other people. I don't get pissed if I see some guy throwing the horns, but if "some guy" becomes "that guy" and he starts competing with the stage, I am not inclined to marvel at his beautiful, beautiful experience in emotionland.

Have a good time, and let me enjoy it too. There is room for both of us.

Heh. The only time I saw them, it was not so different than you describe. Surreal even. I went home and made paper dolls of the bands so I could reenact the stage dialogue for my friends.

Metal is a general term for lots and lots of different sub genre, ska isn't. So death metal Vs Ska or grind Vs ska etc. would be fairer.

they played at ozzfest, and if i didnt like them so much i'd say that just about makes them a nu-metal band.

wikipedia says they invented "sludge metal"

buzz is in a "metal supergroup" known as fantomas, with members of other metal bands: faith no more and slayer.

a bunch of their stuff sounds mighty thrashy to me.

Anything taken to an extreme is going to be a hindrance and annoyance. But that wasn't what your original statement implied, which was irritation with the very act of exhibition because you deemed it an attempt to tell everyone in the room something. As I said before, I think that says more about where your head is than about the expressive audience member and his intentions.

I wouldn't even pursue this, but I run across guys at shows, especially in Brooklyn, who exhibit a folded-arms, sneering attitude at anyone who shows the least bit of unfettered emotion at the music, as if to experience it as anything but a social transaction and/or cerebral experience is adolescent and contemptible. It's snotty and even a little bit sad, because I have to believe they're shutting themselves off from a full experience.

Not that this was ever a serious topic, but there's not a single good reason in all of that to call them metal except the last one. Though i don't hear anything remotely thrashy in The Melvins.

There are a lot of smart metal bands out there.

I, however, am no metalhead. Though I do like it.
