yow. can you believe that as i read this, i was listening to that other magnificent take on Rime of the Ancient Mariner, "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Iron Maiden (on their 1985 Live after Death LP). no such subtleties like shifting the narrative there, i'm afraid. just a lot of big solos.
rather unfortunate i know, but i'm not too ashamed to trawl through the nether regions of my record collection. i can't believe that records like Live after Death were released in the same year as stuff like the Minutemen's "3 Way Tie for Last" - worlds apart.
also, someone said something earlier about their vinyl recording of Spiderland being dodgy because the gaps without music had some noise. i don't know if it's the same effect or not, but the very low noise that i hear in the gaps and just prior to the songs starting (washer, for dinner...) really adds to the whole thing for me. a sense of anticipation just before the music starts. i think it adds to the whole mood of the album generally.
