Bands should only be allowed to release one album - discuss

The point of the topic is that if bands were only allowed to release one album then a lot of those bands might not have released their debut album until they had developed as a band, possibly incorporating all your favourite things about them into one great record.

Not that I actually think bands should only have one album. But I think they should not rush into releasing one, and ideally should think it it the best music they could possibly make.

Maybe this is just reinforcing that point, but we'd end up missing out on a lot of great music while bands sit around thinking "ok, is NOW the best time to do the album? Well, what about NOW? Well, what if our material five years from now is even better? We'd better wait."

As i jokingly pointed out in the tattoo thread, life is not about living in the future, it's about living in the now. The point of recording music is documenting a period in the artist's life, not just producing something for consumption by other people. Frankly, i'd rather have too much recorded music in the world and have to filter through the shit to find the diamonds, than have too little available for filtering. The filtering is fun.

I think everybody's band just needs to break up.

And all this talk about great follow up albums? Sure, they were fine albums, but imagine if they were debuts. Like if Highway 61 was Don Neiland's debut.

Seriously, no more bands. And stop making babies too. And no more girlfriends who play bass, and no more making babies with them either.

I'm the Mayor of Rock N Roll and I know best.

Maybe it's time for newbies to be made to pass some test before they can start posting here.

This is one of the stupider excuses anyone has ever had for a topic.

Very few GOOD bands are fully formed on their first album.

A lot of times, the debut is so good because a half-assed band has been refining and honing the songs on their debut for years. Then, when they make a follow-up, it becomes apparent they are one trick pony.

Truly good bands can sometimes seem to have an endless well of good idea for songs that they pull from. To limit them to one album would be stupid.

I suppose they could change their name each they release the album, but that would be stupid too.
