It's a game. There's no avoiding it. If you don't play the game, you're Ralph Nader or Dennis Kucinich and no one takes you seriously. That's just reality.

That being said, yes...even with people like Lincoln involved, politics...ist berry bad stuff, no?

I would never aspire to public office...especially now, in this modern environment, selling a piece of your soul (if not the whole thing) is a prerequisite.

It's not propaganda, it's truth. That is the way our system was designed to operate. Because it's not working out that way doesn't make it untrue. People choose to vote the same corporate-connected politicians into congress and have not made lobbyists (and their control of the political process) a huge concern. Until that happens it will be more of the same. In some respects, you get what you deserve.

You are arguing two different things. When you say that the Iraq War is 'hidden from us', that is absurd. The news we need is largely available. So when you say 'it is hidden', what you mean to say is that the war is largley ignored, or that those who once paid attention have crawled back into their holes of escapism and materialism. I don't disagree there, but even still, as detached as many are, everyone I talk to is anti-war, like Marsupialized says. They may not have a firm grasp of all the facts, but they do grasp the general illegality and immorality of the war.

It is very important to keep the blame where it belongs in these arguments: on the stupid and lazy American people. Whether it is the war or our single party corporate government, it's ultimately our fault. If Americans never rose up against King George in 1775, whose fault would it have been? Obviously, the Americans. Not King George's.

Throwing around misstatements like 'the war is hidden' provides an easy excuse for the brainwashed dopes. They must be held responsible for this government and for this war. No excuses like 'I didn't know' can be allowed. Let's have some goddamn standards.

Yeah...I have to largely agree with you here. I guess you could accuse me of making more excuses...but the media does not do their job. The media are so fucking irresponsible...that they try to be impartial on a matter where one side is clearly lying! Why present both sides of a lie? CNN and Fox News are both massively irresponsible.

We live with a volunteer army. WE are unaffected. Vietnam got our lazy asses moving on the homefront due to the draft and REAL television footage of that war. I KNOW people who are STILL pro-war (I have family all over the eastern half of the country [east meaning east of the Mississippi]). If the media dealt with the truth, instead of providing a "choice" my idiot family members would not still think that Saddam had something to do with 9/11. These people are out there...and 25% of people still approve of the way that Bush is doing his job. That's a fuckload of people.

Lazy Americans are to blame...but so is the culture that nutures their minds...and the news media that let us down...nay...fucking betray us.

In this age of global media, aren't CNN and Fox pretty much obsolete?

That is a common argument.

Global media has changed the way we get our news, but the old "gathering around the boob tube" collective medium is far from dead.

TV News = entertainment. If you keep the people entertained with shock and awe...you keep the people watching and "learning". Most certainly NOT obsolete. Whenever there is an information revolution (read: Bruce Bimber) the old methods of communication do not fade away...their roles only change. Television is STILL the dominant medium.

It is propaganda, disguised as truth. When our "founding fathers" said it's the voice of the people, they weren't talking about us. This is the way language is manipulated for a desired effect. They were talking about their people, the slave-owners, land-owners. We are the subjugated ones.

For a clearer understanding, read some Chomsky, Marshall McLuhan. Edward Bernays, the father of public relations, wrote an very interesting book in '28, "Propaganda". The principles are still being used today.

Neither would I. I would include Lincoln in the same category as the others.

Once again, though, the media pays its bills with advertising. If viewers can't manage a simple boycott of advertisers that fund these lie machines, then they have failed a basic test of citizenship: vote with your dollars. Just like accepting only a Dem and a GOP candidate in the election- if you don't like either choice, you must reject both. Same with the FOX/CNN control over the false left/right paradigm. Jump ship totally.

Slowly, the masses are turning against the corporate media- viewership is down on TV, newspapers are hurting, those who get their news from the Web almost exclusively are growing.

Not all news is bad. There are some good trends.

It's good to see you back. I uh...missed you?

I was using incorrect grammar by the way. "Media" is plural. An important lesson boys and girls!

I would seriously brush up on your history. Not all men of power are the same. Some men do great things...impossible things...and great leaders are required...especially in a day and age when BUSH is our president. Some people need to bite the bullet...and need to have the ego to play the game of politics...or we're fucked.

No leader is the divine Christ like figure that you want him/her to be. Even Lincoln had to shit on the Constitution to keep our country from splitting apart...now that truly would have been a disaster.
