I have moved in to the new place. I likes it
My advice to anyone seeking an apartment in Chicago, forget The Reader, fuck Craig's List. Just come here to visit for a few days, drive around the neighborhoods you'd want to live in and look for nice-looking buildings with "For Rent" signs. Write down the phone numbers
Then call them up and set up as many appointments as time will allow. Do this in as many neighborhoods as you can. You'll find much better places for much better prices than you ever will in a newspaper or through a rental agent.

P.J.-
"Hey. I might have a small two bedroom apartment available in Lincoln Square in the next few weeks. I have one person who is kind of interested in it, but he has yet to commit.
Pros: Prettiest block in Lincoln Square. Really. No shit, this street is perfect. 2219 W. Gidings, about a 1/2 block from the Square and Giddings plaza. Easy walk to el and metra.
Awesome greystone building. Looks like the type of building that you'd want to live in. The building has been featured in tv shows it looks so"Chicago".
Easy parking. When I lived there, except days when there was a fest, I never parked more than a 1/2 block away.
On-site washer and dryer. Plenty of storage.
Cons:
Garden Unit (read: Basement). It's one of the better garden units I've ever seen, but if she has built in issues with that, a lot of people do, then this is not the place for her.
$875.
Seriously, short of Boys Town (high rent and no parking) there is no better place in Chicago for a single woman to live. Even if this place is not for her, she should consider the Square."
Is this still available oh landlord who shall not be named (that is, if you don't want to be named)?
Does anybody have any opinions on this street?
PJ- this apartment is gone

. I wish I could have let it sit for you and your friend. The people I ended up renting it to I think are going to be a pain in the ass with their "we want heat!" and "we want windows" bullshit. You didn't rent the taj mahal. There are plenty of cheaper options available in or around Lincoln Square if you go a little west of Western or north of Lawrence. Spending a day or two, as several people have recommended, driving around and looking for rent signs is the way to go. I'll keep my eyes open for you. I've been in Lincoln Square for about seven years and I'm really partial to it, but there are obviously a ton of great Chicago neighborhoods to choose from. If she's working downtown you might want to try finding a place near a metra stop. My wife switched to metra after all of the brown line construction crap and she now gets downtown in 12 minutes for $0.15 more each way.
Good luck and let me know if I can be of any help.

We're definitely moving to Chicago, the 1st of january. I was there last week but with no car I couldn't get around to too many neighborhoods in the cold. Looking closely at Bucktown and Avondale. I looked at a couple cool places on whipple. If anyone here has a place up for rent or knows someone who does in those neighborhoods PM me please. Also,

Good luck finding a landlord who'll allow a pet hedgehog without a surcharge.

So, we just signed the lease on a place in Lincoln Square...but when we got there, my girlfriend thought that the place was too cold and now she wants out. The landlord keeps the place at 60 degrees in the winter. The heat is included...the itty bitty firm that controls the place said that we can get out I guess.
Any advice?

TENANTS RIGHTS:
Minimum Heat Requirements (Mun. Code Ch. 13-196)
Generally applies to all residential dwelling units, except owner occupied units.
Chicago's Heat Ordinance requires that from September 15th to June 1st, rental units must be supplied with heat in order to achieve the following minimum temperatures:
* 68 degrees from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
* 66 degrees from 10:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.
...............
Furthermore, old apartments can be cold and drafty no matter what. I'd get a space heater or 2.

Sorry for not being around, I was only at a computer for brief moments beyond Feb. 1st.
I think we're gonna take the apartment...I like it...Melissa was pissed off by the cold, but I think space heaters will do the trick. Thank Christ, too...I was really sick of looking for apartments.
My question now is...how much do space heaters really help? Will the place be warmer with a bunch of stuff in it?
The place is pretty nice beyond the cold factor.
