Ha! I forgot, you're from this area. Yeah, that's exactly where I heard them too, first..."modern rock"...you'd call in and vote on the best "modern rock" song and then the one with the most votes would have a reverbed shriek sound at the beginning and end of the song each time it was played for that week.

Other "shrieks" I remember:

Erasure - "Chorus"
Ned's Atomic Dustbin - "Gray Cell Green"
Shaman - "Move Any Mountain"
Dream Warriors - "My Definition"
Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Soup Dragons - "I'm Free"
Kirstie McCall - "Walking Down Madison"
Howard Jones - "Some Like It Hot"

and the penultimate "Shriek of the Week" in my mind...

...Siouxie and the Banshees - "Kiss Them For Me"

Jesus.

They and the Spin Doctors played every week or every other week or so. I thought I knew every band and everything going on in music at the time, but I'd never heard of Blues Traveler and couldn't understand how they'd manage to pack the place every week, with lines around the block (this was a huge venue) of white hippies. These people did not look like the folks you saw walking around NYC. I later learned they bussed all their fans in from Princeton (very smart). Anyway, some of the guys and me who worked there hated them (esp. The Spin Doctors- the lead singer was a total douche) and their fans and their fans stupid dance. I don't know if you've ever seen the stupid dance these rich 1989 hippy kids did while watching their Blues Traveler do their thing, but if you haven't, consider yourself lucky. Although I will say that Phish played (again, totally unknown to me) and they sounded pretty good.

I once worked with someone who said he played guitar with them at the wetlands back when blues traveler was a grateful dead coverband or some shit. He said they sucked.
