I never knew what bread could be until I spent time in Europe. Even the best bakers in the states, many of whom make spectacular specialty bread just can't get the crust and texture like even the simple corner bakeries in Europe. It might be the flour or whatever but Americans can't quite get it.

Man this is good on fries. I discovered this at nearly every street corner in Germany last summer. Had to bring some home. One favorite street food in Berlin, for good reason, is a currywurst (hot dog basically) cut up in a paper plate with ton of curry ketchup, curry power sprinkled on top and a 250 mm hank of baguette. That and a beer and I'm as happy as I am at 2 AM at La Pasidita after a gig with an extra cheese burrito and a large orchata.

Since I had it in a restaurant in San Francisco by definition it's available in the States, but I'll be damned if finding fermented tea leaves isn't a real bitch anywhere else. Burma Superstar in SF makes a killer tea leaf salad with them.

I thought so too, but there's apparently a joint in Milwaukee that serves it up. Makes sense, since it is the land of cheese curds. I'd imagine you could find it in some border communities. It's easy to make yourself as well.

Have you tried the Buford Highway Farmer's Market? They have a ton of that kind of stuff. Most of it is Latin or Asian in origin, but it wouldn't surprise me if they had a section of English sweets.
