That's what I'm also struggling with when I think about this... no matter how hidden or soundproofed or whatever that the basement dungeon was... I mean apparently he must have spent significant time down there whether doing horrible things, or doing routine basics like bringing them food, etc.

"OK, wife, I'm going to go work in the basement now - don't come down, OK?"

"Uh, OK husband." (thinks to self "Boy I guess that husband of mine sure likes to tinker for hours at his workbench down there... a lot")

It kind of blows my mind to think of 24 years worth of conversations like that, and she had no clue anything was fishy?

I buy her story. I don't think a secret dungeon stays secret for twenty-four years if you tell someone; I think her behaviour now would betray her if she'd known, and the cops don't suspect her worth a dime.

allright, but then how do you live with someone building a soundproof house-within-a-house in your basement or crawlspace or whatever? & not notice anything? unimaginable, but then i guess this whole story stretches the imagination to the limit.

i bet that house would make a hella home studio or rehearsal space.

I would name that studio Statutory Tape.

a MySpace friend wrote:Q: Why did that guy in Austria keep his daughter locked in a basement for 24 years, forcing her to have his babies?

A: To do it for 25 years would just be fucked up and wrong.

_______

Q: How did he convince his wife that it was a good idea?

A: He had money and a steady job.

_______

Q: What gave him the idea?

A: He saw Arnold Schwarzanegger's The Sixth Day, and what it did for his career as an Austrian in the US.

_______

Q: Why did he think he could get away with it?

A: He was a big Megadeth fan and after listening to that song Captive Honour on Countdown to Extinction, he got to thinkin... "Rape your daughter ONE time, your an asshole. Rape your daughter MANY times, you're a sociopath.

Rape your daughter ALL the time, OOOOOAAAAAAAWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU'RE A GOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDD!!!!!!!!!"

I haven't seen the mother involved at all but I'm still gobsmacked that she knew sweet fuck all about this.

Wife: Where you off to honey?

Husband: Basement....aw shit...nothing.

Wife: What basement?

Husband: I said facelift.

Wife: A facelift Josef?

Husband: Whats with all the questions?

Wife: Sorry hon. I'm a bit stressed out with the kids.

Husband: Tell me about it.

It's less a family home and more an apartment block from the pictures. They had other tenants in there too so it's not like he would angrily shake his fist at his wife and then retreat to his 'workbench' through the door to the cellar from the kitchen. It sounds like he had to leave their part of the house and go to the basement.
I still think that even if the wife didn't know the full story, she at least suspected something was going on even if it were just her husband having an affair.

I heard that you have to go through eight doors to get to his 'dungeon'.

Apparently theres a 660pound reinforced door from his workshop in to the secret parts that isn't really visible unless its shown to you.

Even with this information I find it hard to believe he acted alone with no one suspecting what was going on. Ever tried to lift a 660pound anything on your own? Thats two whole Americans!
