I would probably call my friends to figure out what the hell was going on - at the very least I would want to let them know that someone was calling claiming to represent them. And when the certified letters started showing up from this person I definitely would have called my friends.

From what I understand, Corey had no doubts about this person calling being their manager, he just refused to deal with him. You have more direct knowledge of this than I - are you saying that at no point did Corey think this person was in the employ of the Buttholes? Seems a bit odd to me.

They made a decision about how they wanted to conduct their business. He didn't like it, so he chose to ignore it. That's my impression.

I completely agree that by the time it got to court there was nothing to fight for - why bother? I also think that either side could have made a call at any point and resolved the whole thing. Neither did. I don't think either walked away looking great. I do think Corey probably learned something from it, though. The Buttholes... not so much.

From a legal and ethical standpoint, the BHS did not have a leg to stand on, and this decision created a split in decisions between different circuits, implying that Corey would probably have won on appeal. But what he would have "won" was the right to continue working with disgruntled assholes.

It seems only fair that by letting the decision go to the BHS, he allowed them to "win" the right to let their catalog disappear and themselves to go broke.
Why? Can't their new label print the back catalog now?

that's the point.

major labels DONT keep things in print for very long. and unless a band has a big hit and there is a huge demand for their old crap, the major labels aren't going to spend the money to re-press the old crap.

so, their current label could re-release the back catalog, but they don't want to. So it's out of print.

If you didn't see the Butthole Surfers prior to say, the Hairway album, you'd never know how totally invigorating they could be. Complete abandon and spectacle. Once they had some money to burn all the human inventiveness was replaced with strobes and movies and such, and I pretty much hated every show I saw after that.

You obviously have no experience dealing with the Butthole Surfers. They were devious to the point of dishonesty in every encounter I had with them. Try to find someone with direct experience who can say differently.

What always puzzled me about the Butthole Surfers is that for a while they were selling a ton of records by indie standards, toured a lot, were supposedly commanding five figures for a show and selling lots of merch, but they constantly complained in the press about how they lived in dire poverty. Were they really that bad at managing money? Were they spending that much supporting their drug habits? Were they talking out of their asses? What was the deal?

Musically, their collapse into mediocrity is just sad. The Weird Revolution was bad, and the album they made before that, After The Astronaut, was such a disaster Capitol refused to release it. The label that supposedly was going to do so much more for them than T&G. Draw your own conclusions. (Oh, and Gibby's solo album was awful, too.)

Theoretically either side could have made a call and resolved the whole thing, then. I don't have any experience in dealing with them, it's true.

All the more reason Corey should have been happy to see them go. Which I'd guess he is.

I've heard the P album. It's not great, but I'll take it over The Weird Revolution or Gibby Haynes and his Problem. At least Depp has the good sense to just play bass and stay out of the way.
