He was much better on SCTV. But what about synchronized swimming with Harry Shearer?

That's really funny actually, even if it's another distillation of the same trick from the same pony.

Not one vote for the worst SNL era (1980-84) with Tim Kazurinski, Mary Gross, Gilbert Gottfried, Joe Piscopo, etc.? I could go on.

Let's add Nora Dunn. Not the worst, but perhaps the most forgettable cast member ever.

Gilbert Gottfried - can be very funny. I don't think that he had found his nitch at that time or they did not know how to ultilize him. He is very funny as the animamated bird gidget on the animated cartoon cyberchase and his appearnce on Married with Children was a highlight of the show particularly the rescue boat scenes (of the bundys being traped on a lifeboat with gilbert godfried entertaining them)
Tim Kazurinski also seemed under ultilized he was funny on Curb your enthusiam but seemed lost on the show. Joe Piscopo seemed to be talented but he has kind of flopped outside of the show.
I have a soft spot for Charles Rocket on that show he was a performance art guy who somehow made it on the show. I saw him afterward performing in east village clubs and he was entertaining but he somehow did not come across well on TV. He seemed very talented but after that was the guy who said fuck on television and could not go back to the art thing and was not realy a stand up comic. I was sad to hear that he checked out a couple of years ago. I thought he could have done interesting things if given a chance.
Of course Michael O'Donnihue came back for that season at some point to take over the writing staff and what happened I think is that the show went form being a 70's kind of show to a 80's kind of show with artyer absurdist stuff but it did not work.
Overall Mad TV has had a better record of late for being funny.
Tim Meadows as the "Man" on that show was funny. He also had to play a strait man a lot and in that difficult job he did well. People don't remember that Ackroid and Belushi plaid both the cut up and the stratman. It takes a special talent I sure that Dean Martin could explain.
Jimmy Falon seems to enbody the post 90's irony - post modern comedy thing. I think this is what is laughing is about he does not care to even suspend disbelief on the skits. Especially if it is bad he just seems to be enthusiastic and cracking up about it. I don't know if it works as comedy but it was different and he has a apealing personality.

OH,FYP.
Armisen is hilarious when on his own, or when used correctly. I have yet to see SNL do this.

Fuck no. MADTV=SNL-30 I.Q. points + laugh track.
Don't get why people here hate SNL so much. Did you all audition and not get on? Did the sketch show you wrote for and performed in not get picked up?
I think it's going pretty good now. Will Forte and Christin Wiig are fucking great.
Colin Quinn did suck on the show though, once he got fat, but I saw him headline Caroline's around 1990 and he killed.
My least favorite SNL cast member of all time: Joe Piscapo. Apparently he's a major dick and everybody hates him and that's why he doesn't have a career. Someone I know who wrote during that time said he'd get his stage directions from the producer by phone because he wouldn't speak to the director. He'd get pissed if someone wrote a Frank Sinatra sketch that didn't jibe with his God-like view of Sinatra, like "Frank wouldn't do that!"
Fallon's okay. I like The Barry Gibb Talk Show. Nice to see someone so obviously coked up on live television. I can see why people find him annoying though.
Molly Shannon's "joyologist?" That is fucking great. I don't care what any of you say.
Will Farrell not funny?
