????
Meaning: IM would escort them out or hand them money back and make them feel stupid.
This guy is one step away from asking the audience to beat people up. He does this near every show.
Pal, you've watched Instrument too many times. Let me know if you're ever playing a gig and I'll hurl a shoe/bottle/plastic bag of shit at you sometime and let's see how it pans out.
Any time I saw Fugazi, Ian would get hecked and/or deal with an audience member in some fashion. Doing it as long as he had, I'm sure it became a rote occupational duty by the late '90s. I'm sure he had *long* since gotten over the initial emotional shock of "omigosh, people may heckle me at shows."
At one show I attended in Charleston, WV in '98, Ian dealt with a heckler pretty much the same way he did in Instrument. (The heckler turned out to be the club owner's son, and of course was readmitted tout suite.) At a later show in Louisville, '01 or '02 maybe, he was downright genteel when regulating on a guy wanting to slam-dance to "Styrofoam," taking the time to (non-sarcastically) explain how he wants as many people to enjoy their Fugazi show as possible.

Hey there guy, I have played gigs where shoes, water bottles and other barely threatening items (if you are paying attention) whiz past your head. I've had only one gig where I saw a beer bottle fly but it wasn't near me. The last time a sneaker came past me I caught it and tossed it back.
I've seen Instrument once. It didn't really inform me on Fugazi. I enjoyed the snippets of live footage and watched those parts 5 and 12 times.
The next time I play in at some scummy outdoor festival in Europe and some goofy, half-thinking teenager tosses his sneaker in my direction, I'll stop the show, tell him that I'm thinking of buttfucking him, tell security to hold him while I throw the shoe back at him and then I'll ask that a group of people in the crowd beat him to a pulp so that he can leave the show and enjoy a coma or body bag (which is what this guy was about one step away from doing). How's that? Sound like a good idea to you?
Thanks, you really set me straight.

That kid is lucky he only got dragged away by security.
You throw shit at people onstage, you're asking for it.
Oh, yea? What should have happened to him?

I'll be sure to check You Tube for it.

How do you know JH was one step away from asking the crowd to kill the "innocent" dude? Now you're getting all hyperbolic to state your case.
