My old man used this one regularly if my brother and/or I fucked up. Generally his response to missed curfews, fucking with his tools, "B"s on the report card, even actually not mowing the lawn properly, etc.

Wheen (sp?): An undefined amount of something. Usually preceded by 'whole'. "There was a whole wheen of women there last night."

Wadge: (sp?) Pretty much the same as 'wheen', generally reserved for inanimate objects. "I have a wadge of cash on Sailor's Luck in the 2.15 handicap." Never heard this word used outside the town.

Cat: terrible, horrible. Usually refering to the weather or smells. "That stew from last night smells fucking cat." "The weather last week was fucking cat." Where I grew up (north of Ireland) is pronounced 'kyat'. Used in Dublin a bit too. Probably comes from 'catastrophic', now that I think about it.

Cuddy: girl. I've seen it written in older books as 'cutty', but the Norn Irn accent doesn't lend itself to hard T's.

I like the Irish English construction 'for...to'. "I'm going into town for to see the ladies... don't wait up." "I need some paraffin for to burn down the barn for to claim the insurance money."

I'll probably think of some more as this wine bottle empties.

My girlfriend's mother (from Piedmont, MO) does a kind of different thing... every store name ends with an 's whether it really should or not... I guess it is a generational thing, where stores used to always be named after someone... like Woolworth's or Macy's or Hecht's... before we had the more abstract names like Target.

See, she will always turn Target into Target's.

"I need to go to Target's and pick up some light bulbs."

Likewise for Wal-Mart's or K-mart's...

So anyhow, if I ever tell my girlfriend I need to stop in at Dirt Cheap's and pick up a 12-pack, she totally knows I'm clowinin' on her ma a little bit.

(also, somehow along the line, apparently Lowe's forevermore became Lowell's)

That a place like Dirt Cheap exists makes me smile.
