I always thought Bleach sounded like sludgy second-tier Sub Pop stuff, but Nevermind had tons of great songs and great guitar, and In Utero was a total flamethrower front to back. Dave Grohl is am amazing drummer, Krist Novoselich was a strong and underappreciated bassist, and as for Kurt ... any guy who after selling a million records goes out of his way to tell America's youth they should stop reading Rolling Stone and start listening to the Melvins, the Raincoats, the Vaselines, the Meat Puppets, the Boredoms, Flipper, the Jesus Lizard, Black Flag, Mudhoney et al can't be all bad. I liked Cobain as a musician and wish he was still around (and had had the sense to divorce Ms. Love).

Overrated, yeah, but hardly crap. Those who think they are generally seem to be reacting to their level of fame and financial success rather than the music.

There is a good Nirvana discussion in this thread.

anarchyinthebronx wrote:they were unsatisfied with the Vig mix on Nevermind, too polished.

From what I hear and read, one can attribute the sound of the commercially released version of "Nevermind" far more to Andy Wallace, who remixed the record, than Butch Vig.

This statement is in no way intended to deflect from Butch Vig any of the criticism that he so richly deserves for his many musical sins. (But salut, Viroqua WI, birthplace of Butch Vig and home of Grandma Montebianco!)

We must also keep in mind that Nirvana walked away from the "Nevermind" sessions very shiny and happy with their shiny happy "Nevermind" record.

By the way, I listened to those "In Utero" recordings that someone posted to the Gmail account. It's a completely different and better record -- and I already have an unhealthy amount of love for the official release of "In Utero". I'm glad that I had the chance to hear these recordings.

Scott Litt! You ruined "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies"!

But I love "Document" and "Automatic For The People" very much!

These mp3s sound like they were taken from a tape of a rough mix of the album. Yeah, they're pre-Litt. The thing is, they're clearly playing too fast (must be a problem with the tape it came from).

I have this German non-Litt LP. I really think this whole thing is overblown. The released version still sounds good.

Yes, the released version is great, but now I can see what might have been. I mean, I don't think that I'll ever hear "Heart-Shaped Box" again without thinking to myself, "I wonder why they did this?"

But I guess that the band made the decision to have Scott Litt rework these songs, at least as far as I know, so really, that's that. That's the record that they chose to share with the world.

Hey, maybe Nirvana will re-record some of these songs at some point.

I'd love to hear it!

I just downloaded the original mixes of "In Utero" and the first thing I noticed is that the pitch appears higher than the released version.

Was this because the person ripping it from the bootleg vinyl has a speedy motor, or did Scott Litt slow it down to get a deeper sound?

I would imagine it's the former, but I wouldn't put anything past mister Litt.

Mark Prindle didn't say that "In Utero" "stinks like ass". He didn't give it a postive review, but he never says that it "stinks like ass".

Just so that we're clear, the Nirvana "stinks like ass" comment was made by a person who posted a response to Mr. Prindle's enthusiastic nine stars review of "Bleach". Here's the quote:

petros@isoc.net (Poppleton) wrote:are you on crack? bleach is the worst hunk of shit they ever released! It stinks like ass.

There you go, people. I have clarified for all time the Nirvana "stinks like ass" issue.

Fact checking!

is steve's work 'super-compressed'?

not unless he's being lying to us all these years, but I have read record reviews where steve's sound is described as "hyper-compressed", I think they were talking about the owls album. It's the perpetual conundrum - "can a music reviewer ever know their ass from their elbow?", see also the thread about the high on fire record for similar issues

Nirvana were fine, but lets be honest, if frank black was as pretty as Kurt Cobain and Kurt was as ugly as Tad, we would not be having this conversation. Inferior but good material that sold on the basis of blond hair and blue eyes.

At least they never got as bad as the foo fighters

An expanded edition with those versions of I Hate Myself, Moist Vagina, Marigold, Gallons, etc. would not hurt someday.
