This criticism of Angus Young's guitar playing is lame. Angus/the Young bros never claimed to be interesting or progressive as players. They subscribe to and in a way perfected the Pete Townshend School of Musical Sensationalism, which, in the context of balls-to-the-wall no bs hardrock, works for me. I think any AC/DC live footage would suffice as clarification on that point. It's highly expressive stuff.

Also, AC/DC's guitar work, while some of it was arguably pre-dated by Free's great Paul Kossoff, was always decidedly unique in term of phrasing, interplay and tone. Whether or not you like it, listen to the first few bars of any AC/DC track and it's immediately clear who you are dealing with.

Is Steve single handedly responsible for AC/DC being one of those bands that people like? I can't remember anybody (apart from the metal-for-life folk) ever listening to AC/DC when I was younger, and then bam suddenly everybody's a (retrospective) fan.

This criticism of AC/DC is even lamer.

Overly macho antics, lots of boring and redundant songs, Angus Young asking half a million bucks for playing a couple of tunes with a friend's band a while ago (he lives in my vicinity): CRAP.

The Let There Be Rock album, the spectacular combo-playing, this video, the mass of super-kinetic riffing: NOT CRAP.

AC/DC is NOT CRAP.

Have always loved them. For the same reasons the whole time.

Same with ZZ Top.

I remember how shocked I was to find that so many of my musicianly friends have the same affection I do for these two particular bands.

I just grew to love them hearing them on the radio, while growing up in Montana. It never dawned on me that other people who played music somehow related to the music I play would have any truck with them. But many of these people seem to appreciate these bands for the same reasons.

I understand why someone wouldn't like AC/DC or ZZ Top, easily. But it means one has a bit of a deaf spot for hard rock. Which is OK--we all have deaf spots.

Cool. I agree that they aren't 'interesting or progressive'.

That said, I tend to enjoy music that I find 'interesting'.

I tend not to enjoy music that I find 'uninteresting'.

That wasn't a criticism of AC/DC, it was a question.

Question: 'When did it become 'cool' to name-check AC/DC. Certainly when I was a lad AC/DC were listened to exclusively by metal-for-life type folk.

Before Steve started singing the praises of AC/DC I don't think I can remember a decent band/musician singing their praises.

Challenge then:

Find an example of a decent band/musician banging-on about AC/DC before Steve started.

I remember Kurdt name-checking them all the time, which was probably that more influential than whatever Steve Albini ever said. Lots of people were into AC/DC when I was a lad (and I think I'm younger than you are).

But you seem to have a problem with people opening other people's eyes/ears to music that maybe they wouldn't have been open to in the first place, for whatever reason. Why?

It sounds like you are underestimating folk's ability to judge what they like and don't like for themselves, which comes off as rather "schmuck", with all due respect.

:WF: zero.

One day somebody 'cool' will dare to point out that Angus Young is actually very, very far from being an interesting writer/player and *pop* the weird 'AC/DC as a ubiquitous name-to-check band bubble' will burst.

Weird.

CRAP.

My kind of thoughts though I would give a WF of one as their Videos are so daft and stupid that they actually have an entertaining quality. I never thought in terms of crap but more in terms of silly as far as AC/DC are concerned. Did John Peel like them? I don't smegging think so. Also, I never met a girl who liked them. Kinda bad omen in my book.
