Did you play the first Nioh? I really liked it, though it was probably way too hard at times to be thoroughly enjoyable. I've been looking for a good souls-like game waiting for Elden Ring. I've been such a fan of the souls series since Demon Souls. I feel like I've played all the souls-like games, but none really compare. Nioh came close, but it was at times too many things all at once in terms of items and mechanics.

I really loved Sekiro, but admittedly I never finished it. When you say Nioh 2 reminds you of it, what do you mean? Are you familiar with From's previous games?

That's funny. Sekiro is only From game I haven't been able to get through! Could not get the combat down despite repeated attempts. Everyone kept telling me it would suddenly "click' for me and I'd become a badass lethal ninja. Didn't happen. Gave up.

I did not play the first Nioh. I have the same complaint with the second one though. Overall I'm really enjoying, but there are bosses that are SUPER hard in a way that feels unbalanced.

The item/mechanics system is really deep in Nioh 2, but it also doesn't feel that important which is nice. One could spend all day fine tuning their build to optimize stats, but the difference on builds that I've painstakingly crafted vs. builds where I've just gone "oh that hat looks cool" seems negligible. I'm still on my first play through, so I'm guessing that changes on NG+'s. Also worth noting there is a fairly common item that lets you re-assign all of your stats, so it's easy to change your build and play style at any point.

There are two things from Nioh 2 that remind me of Sekiro. The first one is the aesthetic, I'm a fan of the bright colors, and Nioh 2 does a good job of having aesthetically different looks level to level. I've only played part of Dark Souls 3, but I wasn't a big fan of the kind of monochromatic bummer world. Second thing is that Nioh 2 has a combat mechanic called "burst counter" (my understanding is that it is new since the first Nioh). It reminds me of Sekiros parry system, and makes combat feel fast and fun.

Dark Souls 3 is the chef's kiss of these games. The world is drab because... well, it's a dying world. The aesthetic is really part of the story. I highly recommend playing it again! What I love about From games is, even though Bloodborne and Sekiro are not part of the Souls series, they still use the things they learned and apply them to the next game. Elden Ring looks like everything they learned from Demon Souls to Sekiro. Also, DS never felt unfair, whereas I felt like Nioh was impossible at times and I had to just shut the game off. I like a challenge, but I also like to have fun and games should first and foremost be fun to play. I still really liked Nioh, despite this aspect. I think I might reinstall and try to play it through again.

I've started playing "Mother 3", which is astonishing so far. I'm playing the fan translation on an emulator, and the GBA visuals are gorgeous on the laptop screen. The soundtrack and sound in general is smashing, and the writing is joyfully absurd.

I've also started "Disco Elysium", which is slow and fantastic. The two games seem to go well together.

I started replaying the first Nioh last night. I was in the middle of the game from the last install. There's so many mechanics to it, that I remember why I stopped playing: I feel so overwhelmed by all the mechanics and options for character building. Having said that, the combat is really good and it can be an enjoyable game if you're into the genre. I don't think I have the patience for it, though.

I just picked up Grindstone on sale. It's a puzzle game that's kind of like an adventure. It's much deeper than it appears. The artwork and the music is really great. (The publisher is Cappybara, who has a small roster of some great games.)

I have been following a game called Death Trash for a few years. It's been in development, but they just released a demo on Steam. Early Access is going to open in August. It's a post-apocalyptic, pixelated RPG. Looks promising!

Iratus Lord of the Dead is on sale for $10 on Steam.

This game is totally worth the full price, so for $10 it's a steal. If you have played Darkest Dungeon, it's similar in a way: you create a squad of 4 characters and crawl through a dungeon using dynamic turn-based actions. The big difference here is that instead of delving into the dungeon as a group of heroes, you are a necromancer trying to escape the dungeon by raising an army of the dead. The mechanics differ much after the squad concept. You play as Iratus, who has his own abilities that he can mix up with his minions that he builds out body parts from the dead bodies from battle. Stress plays a different role than it does in DD... as you cause the stress as one of 3 types of damage. There's a whole management section for alchemy and skill tree upgrades for Iratus and individual trees for minions. There are endless builds, so the replay-ability is high. Not to mention the dev team has consistent updates that change the game up. While I loved Darkest Dungeon, I never really got that deep into it. With Iratus, it sucked me in immediately and I've played the hell out of it. Bonus if you change the voice language from English to Russian (it is a Russian game, after all).
