I saw Goat (jp) last night in London. Incredibly intricate and complex, and fun. Kind of like very early Battles, but way more disciplined.

I picked it up but have only jumped around a little in it so far.

I picked up a (used, unfortunately cuz funds are tight) copy and am devouring it. It's like an expanded version of that Iverson interview with some pictures, flyers, and whatnot. I just love his grasp on what he sets out to do vs. what he doesn't, and his fearless exploratory nature. There are tons of references to other early AACM records and artists I need to check out as well.

I always thought Andre 3000 was cool and I think it's cool he made a flute jams record:

André 3000 opens up about 'New Blue Sun,' his daring new solo album

But I think there's something even more interesting about this particular moment for this particular kind of music.
There's a lot of potential for large numbers of people to consider (perhaps suddenly) a very different kind of approach to creating and listening to music.
So that's groovy as far as I'm concerned.

I'm the same age as AB and people my age may remember when the whole world got into Nirvana but you already knew Tad, Mudhoney, etc.
It's probably happening all over again to people who have been into weird synth flute jams for years before this.

I'm having trouble articulating this, but here goes (please bear with me):
You can't really play 10 seconds of this album for somebody as a preview -- but with more beat-oriented kinds of music, you can.

I hope it's a smash, let's have Andre on the Superbowl.

Yep, I love the idea of it, though think the actual album could have used some editing and focus. But I think something's been building for a while: a lot of artists in this thread get wide press coverage and play festival shows, and I wonder if the mainstreaming of things like mental health awareness, psychedelics, and meditation/sound baths are expanding people's tastes as well.

Maybe Andre gives editors an excuse to allow music writer freaks to finally cover some of their less popular interests. Fine with me!

If OutKast fans are left wanting "more" than what's offered on this record, it raises interesting questions about what "more" actually is.
This is "just" improvised flute music, etc.
It seems like AB is pretty straightforwardly saying "if you want to hear what I have to say right now, this is it" and I can somehow relate to that and deeply appreciate it.

As somebody who has lately taken interest in music that avoids strict structures, tempos, repeated rhythms, etc, it's kind of delightful to ponder and observe.

Jaimie Branch, Gilles Coronado, & Tim Daisy @ Elastic Arts 2022

Saw the Dennis Gonzalez Legacy Band last night at Texas Theatre in Dallas last night, and it was mind bending. His kids and former collaborators coming together to celebrate his life and music. What a legend. The show was recorded and filmed so it should be out in the world sooner or later.

I had previously not been into jazz, but I heard Shape of Jazz to Come for the first time somewhat recently and have been digging into an entire world that I know basically nothing about. It's been very interesting and refreshing to say the least.

Last week I bought a pretty expensive ticket to see Shabaka without realizing The Comet is Coming had broken up and that he has set the saxophone down in favor of other instruments. I'm sure it will be fine, but certainly different than what I was thinking when I bought the ticket.

I recall an announcement on social media a year or so ago that he had 'retired' the saxophone.. didn't quite know what to make of that (or how much to believe it).
