Kurtz is a despot at the end of the world, probably doing and seeing awful things on the reg. That incarnation of Brando playing him makes enough sense. He's rudderless, you wouldn't want some kind of hardass, whose wits are always sharp, and who does 120 pushups every morning, being the actor. The guy's in no man's land, adrift and not coming back.
So . . . Dobie Gillis?

I'm thinking the fake-autistic kid from The Good Doctor.

This thread has me thinking about The Score, one of the last movies in which Marlon Brando had a role. There was a time, in the early 2000s or thereabouts, when I was either stalling on finishing film school or had just finished film school, and would somewhat despondently watch cable TV at night. The Score was always playing on there! It was in such regular rotation with the likes of The Opportunists and Heat, that I would get them all confused at times.
Anyway, Brando’s role in it is noteworthy because the more risible side of his persona has an outlet. You know, the usual “guy setting up a heist” stuff, but with some silly, lighthearted wisecracks with fellow veteran/pro De Niro thrown in, to keep it from seeming bloodless. Haven’t seen the movie in ages and kinda wanna rent it now. Maybe I will. Can’t be as bad as Cliffhanger!

Ain't gonna review all six pages of this, but my vote is for Eddie Deezen.

Robert Mitchum would have been a fascinating choice, but I'd cast Patrick McGoohan.
