I ended up getting the UAD Fairchild on the cheap with the most recent Plugin Boutique sale. I started mixing with it and I really like it, it makes a lot more sense than the Pulsar Mu.

There's this one plugin that I've come to absolutely love: https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/prod ... dsceq.html

It's a very subtle coloring EQ that simulates magnetic tape heads. It's kinda meant to push the knobs hard. Maybe not perfect for every application, but I've been using it on a stereo recording of an acoustic guitar and it just brings it to life is wonderful ways.

I love the UAD Fairchild.

I use it more than any other plug-in. I use it on basically every vocal I record, on the input, and occasionally I'll put it on the track after it's recorded as well. Great on acoustic guitar also.

I've been using it for vocals, acoustic guitar, and some busses. Now, one of my go-to compressors!

If you are looking for other Tube Compressor emulations the Kazrog True dynamics is like $25 right now and has 3 completely different cool tube compressor emulations in it. Like everything Kazrog, it sounds great. The 3 types sound very different, and the gain reduction behaves very different on each. It's really 3 plugins in a single host VST. All very colorful, non-transparent sounding shit. VERY Squishy! I like them a lot.

Oh gorsh. I love the LA-2A, the LA-3, the 1176, and the Fairchild from UAD. I also like the NEOLD compressors from Plugin Alliance. And there's like 3 different free versions of varying Distressors that are pretty good (though, I don't go to a Distressor that often) and I love Complexx from Kiive, it's a total workhorse. Oh, and the SSL digital compressor is pretty good for a clean, no-fuss compressor. I need another compressor like I need a hole in my head, but I'll check 'em out!

famous last words I've said a million times. These are at least a little sonically different than the zillion1176 / LA2A clones out there (I have too many 1176 knockoffs for damn sure) and really cheap! I've tried a bunch of Distressor VST and I usually find any modern compressor that comes in a DAW can do pretty much that job. If I'm not looking for a compressor that really "sounds" like something interesting, I just just Kotelnikov or the Reaper compressor. They compress.

I went to check out those compressors and watched reviews on them just to get an idea, every review kept referencing True Iron. Ok, I like the SPL Iron, but I really like the True Iron, and they're very similar in application. The True EQ is also something I was looking for. All in sale for half of, plus an extra 10%.

So yeah, got another hole in my head, plus some.

I love True Iron. It is the last thing on every Drum and Synth buss always for me. The saturation is super cool. True EQ is also very cool, but can be a lot if you aren't careful. That company make great sounding stuff. The Avalon 747 is fantastic, the multiband clipper is really good. The little Airline Amp sim sounds pretty cool if not kinda a one trick pony. They update regularly and the pluggins are reasonably priced. I'm a fan and other than the weird metal amp sim I have bought all of them. I like that everything definitely has a sound and isn't a brainfuck mind trick of deciding if it helping or hurting.

But seriously, the Avalon is cool. I have a few preamps that are my go-tos. I really like preamps that just do saturation and limited EQ. I use FrontDaw when I wanna blast something out, or TUBA from Analog Obsession for some low/high pass filtering and subtle saturation. I just downloaded the AO BriPre to try, but I also have a Helios Pre that I need to start using.

I do need a good clipper, though. Their free clipper looks interesting.

I've been trying to fly with that Avalon and nothing else on my mix bus for a bit and so far it's doing well. Very subtle compressor. Very subtle EQ. Good to mix into without having to babysit it. Kazrogs does subtle saturation better than anyone in my book.
