A good place to look is also a certain post-WWII generation of non-Western composers or performers who came relatively late in life to a more authenitic approach to things rooted more in their cultures after studying the European / American avant-garde.

Jose Maceda is a good example.

There are probably more good examples of this in pop music etc. too.

Yeah, he didn’t really blossom until he did that collab with Trent Reznor
Not sure if this is uninformed sarcasm or obscure humour, but I don't get it.
Close; it’s sarcastic humor. Do I really have to explain it for you?
I think you're gonna have to, because that answer hasn't cleared anything up.

Slogged away for years in various incarnations before making any kind of impact.

The joke is in the idea that Bowie didn't make any impact until "I'm Afraid of Americans" which most fans would find to be a ridiculous belief.
Escape Rope / Black Mesa / Inflatable Sex Babies

Robert Pollard/Guided by Voices - the story (I think) was that he was going to call it quits with Propeller, as he was in his mid-30s at the time. And that was before Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes.

Sleaford Mods (previously mentioned)

Edit - can also argue that the classic line-up’s best material was during their reunion nearly 20 years later

Ok, I thought there might have been more to it that I wasn't getting.
