Until today I had somehow never paid any attention to the Jesus Lizard, despite having been to one of their shows at First Avenue in 1991 (I was tripping to the point of total inanity that evening, in the company of my acid-head then-boyfriend who was also tripping and was unfamiliar with them and was really not liking their sound) and despite having had them pimped to me energetically on and off by persons with credible taste. You just can't listen to everything, you know? Anyway I finally got a copy of Goat and listened to it today, and you know what? This is a really good record. I think there was a window of time during which if I had been exposed to this it would have changed my life and I would've been carrying on about it and drooling for years, and I think that window has closed, but this is clearly not any kind of crap whatsoever. Rub it on me, Duane.

I bought Goat after reading about the Jesus Lizard and hearing they were good, especially after reading the lavish worship on this board.

I remember thinking, as I drove down Woodward Ave, pressing the "On" button, that "this had better be worth the money."

Then...wham. "Then Comes Dudley" came roaring out of my speakers and a maniacal grin spread across my face. That bass...

I still don't have Head/Pure, Liar, or any other Jesus Lizard album. But Goat is a half-hour of perfection. My dad even kind of likes it, which is astounding.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

Both GOAT and LIAR are astonishing. Get LIAR next. Unlike the earlier stuff, it's fast and pummelling and screeching and anarchic.

I'm also a big fan of the songs on PURE as played in a live setting ("Bloody Mary," "Blockbuster," etc.). PURE is filled with great songs which unfortunately do not feature Mac's drumming.

Thanks. I have heard (and adored) "Boilermaker," so this just confirms what my next purchase should be.
