Argentina definitely dominated the game during the first 75 min. They played great but had just three good chances to score. It was amazing Argentinian football but they failed to score goals. Statistics don't say much when it comes to football. Germany had more "shots on target" and less fouls than Argentina. Pekerman made a massive mistake when he took out Riquelme. The Germans played really nervous until Klose's goal. His fifth goal in five games, by the way. Go Miro, go!
Some of them even seemed to be afraid. Germany was very lucky to win this one but the longer the game lasted, the better they played.
But what the fuck was wrong with Cufro, Heinze and Rodriguez after the game? And what the fuck has Blatter, Beckenbauer and the FIFA to do with it?

Klar, Argentinien wurde 80 min lang der deutsche Arsch auf einem Teller serviert, aber dann muss man doch bitteschön die zweite Hütte machen!

Argentina seemed to lose their nerve and may have lacked the mental strength of the German players.

Pekerman knows he made the wrong decision and there was no Crespo, Riquleme, Saviola or Messi on the pitch to attack a suspect German back four as the match drew on towards penalties.

Germany held their nerve in the penalty shoot-out, each kick was well executed. They have proven to be excellent at penalty shoot-outs (Argentina too have had success at them before).

I felt sorry for Robert Ayala who defended with great vigilance and resolve throughout. His penalty kick was poor, but this should not detract from his performances at this tournament.

I expect both England and Portugal to show plenty of grit and determination this afternoon.

Jimmy Greaves in The Sun newspaper: "If England lose today what they will have done is to leave excited children in tears."

It was hard to see John Terry, very much a man, sobbing after England's elimination on penalties from the World Cup. Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves were also overcome with emotion. All three played very well.

The machinations of hype have helped make this a shattering anti-climax for the players and the more tender minded fans.

A stout, backs-to-the-wall performance, a brave stand and elimination on penalties.
A familiar conclusion to a major tournament for England.
