WC 1982 - Germany - Italy

WC 1986 - Argentina - Germany
WC 1990 - Germany - Argentina
WC 1994 - Brazil - Italy
WC 1998 - France - Brazil
WC 2002 - Germany - Brazil

There won't be a South American team in the semi-finals. That's even rarer.
France played well today and deserved to win but the next game against Portugal is going to be very difficult. It's a great team.
If we're lucky, we might reach the final.

tommydski,

Great post on England.

Good diagnosis of the problems that a particular arm of the English media causes. Instead of orchestrating press campaigns for Frank Lampard's inclusion and fake sheik stings they could have just reported on events rather than trying to run the England team.

You did, at the outset, offer a realistic and sober appraisal of England's prospects. The delusional, nebulous hype was bound to breed dissapointment.

Steven Gerrard looked fatigued, but Rio Ferdinand has now had two very good World Cups on a personal level.

I too hope that McLaren doesn't discard Owen Hargreaves. Players should earn their place in the England team. The new Wembley shouldn't be a stomping ground for the likes of Joey Barton and Kevin Nolan just because they play a few good matches in the Premiership and the public don't want some "tousle haired twat" flown over from Germany.

Italy will beat Germany.

Germany's record against Italy is statistically terrible -in Florence last game 4-1 to Italy- and considering Italy have actually been playing very well, -only conceding one goal so far- highly likely. Everyone has been slagging Italy but so far they have had a very successful World Cup.

France will beat Portugal.
