What are we talking here? Does this fall under discretionary spending purchase, or would it mess up your budget for the month? There’s no need to post the actual amount, but is it over (over by a lot?) that line?

Another thing about gear that I think doesn’t get enough talk is that with everything you get, you’ve obligated yourself for upkeep, finding physical space for, and also if you have some materialistic (I may be projecting) tendencies, it’s gonna take up mental space that may not be healthy or work against your creativity (I’m definitely projecting here).

This. Particularly as I get older. I feel kind of ashamed of having the number of guitars I have.

Also, and I know this is screamingly obvious, but more of x you have, the less time you get to spend with each individual x. I can only play one guitar at a time.

Agree, I'm trying to keep the guitar collection to something "reasonable", I don't have any interest in having a bunch of stuff just sitting in cases not getting played.

That said, I definitely feel like it's nice to have a bunch. So often it happens that I'll play one for a half hour, put it down, look at the one on the stand next to it "oh you're pretty, let's play you for awhile" and end up playing for another hour. Put that one down, "oh maybe just a minute on this one"....

For what its worth, I got those Vistalites for $600. I am looking forward to this as a new project of adding reso heads to the bottom of those concert toms as well as comparing against the 22" I already have and then selling the one I like the least.

Interesting side note, these are concert toms from the factory...but they already have bearing edges cut which is one stress reduction for taking on that project. I just have to line up holes and carefully drill them. An additional interesting observation though is Neal and I are both sure that those bearing edges are 30 degree cuts instead of 45. I also learned about how the seam on later VIstas used a V-cut instead of butt-join for a better seal.

Also the seller threw in a 12" tom that wasn't part of the listing that is completely split apart in the middle so I plan to repair that which will both give me an extreme-case learning opportunity + have a low-risk opportunity to experiment on it w/ drilling for lugs (and possibly even cutting a steeper bearing edge down the road). Anyway, I'll find a separate thread for this when I start to dive in.

IDK, I like fixing things, upgrading them, etc. I don't know that I needed a JMP on it or to be TMOOI'd.

Having a few guitars around is really great for recording. It seems like such an easy problem solver - if something’s not happening you can just switch guitars and turn whatever you’ve got going on its head without necessarily having to start over on your gain staging.

I think David Briggs recommended something like that in Shakey - if it sucks, change strings or switch guitars.

On the other hand, i have a walk-in closet I can’t even walk in… because of the CASES. And all of the vintage ‘good deals’ have had horrendous ground issues I had to sort through and you can bet it was never mentioned in the listings. Pretty much everything is a time bomb.

But having carbon copies of the same guitar, I dunno. Sounds like a road dog type of business and I am not in that world.

But the biggest concern for extraneous gear purchases for me is to make sure whatever I’m buying is a safe place to park my money.

For real, honestly not having a case is definitely not a deal breaker for me anymore as I really can’t fit anymore in my basement bedroom closet space.

Damn, I'm not a masochist but the hits kept on coming and they worked. You all TMOOI!

All the points are good: time to play, owning too many items, cost, space—these are real issues to consider. They had been considered, but you made me consider it more.

The price wasn't ridiculous, but it wasn't nothing (around the $500 mark). I'm not a road dog, it's no wise investment (unless guitar prices do some more jumps in this ridiculous world), so I let it alone.

Better to take that money and apply it to finishing some other projects first.

side note: cases. Not having them sucks just as much as having them. What a pain they are. I'm against keeping the guitars in cases, but then you ever see that interview with Nels Cline and his room full of guitars in cases? Makes me want to consider it...in case I ever have a spare room put them in, of course

You all are the best. Thank you, thank you, thank you
